You can make an argument that says Kompany is the best manager in the league, Jamie.

In seriousness though, he’s proven that he is a great manager more than once, and he is a manager that can make a mid-table that can punch well above its weight, but has so far has not demonstrated the ability to manage egos and expectations at a “big” club.

Who other than Pep and Klopp would rank above him honestly? He has a better resume than anyone else in the league

It’s difficult to say that. You obviously have two at the top, which is Klopp and Pep.

After them, in the second tier, you would have the likes of Howe, Emery, Arteta, Poch, RDZ. It’s difficult to say any of these are categorically better than the others.

Emery has had the most success out of all of them, three europa leagues in a row with Seville, a Europa league with Villarreal and the taking them to the champions league semi final knocking out juventude and Bayern before being knocked out by liverpool.

Fair take to put Arteta in the B tier as an Arsenal Fan. IMO only a premier league title separates him from them.

What has Arteta achieved that the others in that list haven’t? Finishing second once in a league where United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham all had a terrible year?

I mean tangibly, it’s just the FA Cup. Intangibly he’s transformed Arsenal into a real title contender against THIS city team. Only Klopp has managed to do that in the last 5 or so seasons.

That and Arteta not having more than one good finish in the premier league. He’s got miles to go before being considered in the Pep klopp tier.

You can’t put Howe, RdZ on a similar level to Emery. Even Arteta & Potch is a stretch.

Emery as won 4 Europa leagues, runner up too and got to the CL semifinals with a non ‘big 3’ Spanish team. That alone puts him above the others.

He did as well as anyone at PSG. (Record points in the league wasn’t it?)

Let alone the last year at Villa.

Poch is not the same tier as Arteta I’d argue. He’s pretty much been carried by managing a decently big team. But what has he achieved really?

I put a tenner on Villa to finish in the top 2 this season, they had a great finish to previous season and odds at 100/1 were pretty generous. I don’t expect anything to come of it but cash out could be nice if they can maintain some of this form up until Christmas.

I think he’s achieving great things at Villa and the team is a genuine threat at the moment; they have a good core set of players.

You can make an argument for most things. Doesn’t make them correct.

I could argue that Gary Neville is an unbiased man of unmatched quality and an al round great guy. Sure, I’d be wrong. But half the fun of arguing is chatting absolute bollocks and trying to defend it.

Managers have levels they are suited to. I put them into four buckets:

    1. The Artist - Takes a world class group to a whole nother level. Revolutionise how the game is played- Pep is the current man. Cruyff at Ajax, Sacchi at Milan, Wenger at Arsenal. Other honourable mentions include Ancelotti, maybe Zidane at Madrid.

    2. Disruptor - Takes top teams and players and gets them challenging for major honours. Not always the prettiest stylistically but usually very effective. Klopp, Mourinho, Tuchel, Conte, Simeone

    3. The up and comer - can take a midtable or lower midtable team and get them able to match the big boys from time to time and perhaps nick a European spot or one of the minor cups. Struggle in bigger jobs. De Zerbi, Moyes (at Everton), Potter (Brighton)

    4. The Fire Fighter - the one to turn to in a relegation scrap, to unite the team, make them tough to beat - Allardyce, Dyche, Tony Pulis

For me Emery is a great example of a manager falling into category 3.

Now just to be clear, no one type is necessarily “better” than the others. It’s very dependent on the situation. Would Pep be able to keep Everton up or be able to do the job Pulis did back in the day at Stoke? No. Likewise would Pulis be able to surpass Pep if he was given the same resources? Doubt it.

I could feel this coming for Aston Villa for a while, I thought Gerrard would have been the guy if I’m honest but he completely failed. As soon as they announced Emery it just felt right tho, and they’ve been great to watch under him so far. They’ve got great players all over the pitch and they’re playing really good football.

Is this the same man that had Arsenal conceding 30+ shots to Watford and lost 6-1 to Barcelona in one of the biggest bottle jobs in football history.

He’s the same man that won 3 Europa leagues in a row ,one by defeating Klopp.

Took Villareal to a CL semi-final defeating Bayern Munich.

Made Valencia finish constant in top 4 positions.

Isn’t this much enough to credit he’s a good manager.

Looking at the team budget and the size he used to manage to take trophies, that’s enough for him.

Yes that’s the same Arsenal that he left in 10th place after not winning a game in the league for nearly 2 months and taking us on our worst winless run in 27 years.

Well, my issue with this is this time last year everyone was saying De Zerbi is one of the best managers ever, he’s gonna take over from Pep etc, and now look how the tables have turned. People intermittently suck off Eddie Howe from time to time too
