Kind of funny. Long story short, my headphones broke and since this is my first iPhone after 13 years on Android, I just had to try it out. My initial thought was that the pixel didn’t have a dac and neither did the USB hub, but it works on the iPhone and I’m a bit surprised 😂👏

The pixel doesn’t have a DAC that can be used for external headphones. You have to buy an additional adapter that has the DAC inside of it to connect whatever speakers you want to use.

The iPhone doesn’t have it either lmao in this case it’s the hub that has one

Wow, so many incorrect info on this thread.

USB or lightning outputs have digital only. They cannot output analog audio. So these phones do not have audio DAC nor amplifier. DAC and amp are on dongles or external devices.

Phones with headphones jack have built in DAC and tiny amplifier, which can output analog signal directly.

As to why OP’s external device works with iPhone and not pixel is likely compatibility. Dongle will state which device it is compatible with.

Thank you very much for the clarification, I thought it wouldn’t be the main discussion to be fair lol.

The last part makes me really interested. I have tested the hub on: MacBook Windows machine Raspberry Pi iPhone

And it worked with all of them. Would love to try it on a Samsung.

pixel have less USB C abilities than other androids. Samsung’s can connect to docks like this and use external displays, ethernet, even SD cards and such. I believe someone even connected a hard drive to a powered dock and it worked on the Samsung.

I’ve done this same thing with my Samsung and a USB a to USB C adapter, and a USB C to headphone adapter. works fine to listen and charge if needed too.

USB-C, or the Audio Accessory Mode, supports both the “Analog Mode” and the “Passthrough mode”. In the latter, the DAC is located in the cable. The jack adapter included with the Pixel 2, for example, is one of these. When the cable does not work, its probably because the phone does not know what mode to use or because it has not implemented the “Analog mode” over USB-C.
