Current name is Frank the bin spider, but I don’t know his family name.

I do very much appriciate the joke.

But it actually brings up a very interessting point about colloquial spider names. If you are in Europe (the geographical one), you can actually just call it “garden spider”. It’s also well know as the “cross orb-weaver”. It’s name “diadematus” is the same word as Diadem, a crown, often with a cross on them.

But In the US, “garden spider” usually refers to Argiope aurantia, though it’s more common with the prefix “yellow” or “black and yellow”.

The “Australian graden spider” whould be “Hortophora transmarina” (formerly know as Eriophora), but of course in Australia they’d skip the “Australian”.

Point being, “garden spider” is a very ambiguous name. And additional prefixes might be added or left out depending on where you are.

Also it brings me to rule 1. “Geographic Location is Mandatory; When requesting an identification”. I actually bothered the mod of the community to put that up there.

In the case of this one, the location isn’t important as it’s really easy to identify. But geographic location can otherwise often distingish very similar spiders (and their names) and is an important context to provide. I’d emplore you to include that in your future ID requests.
