Endless Sky is an open source space merchant game with space battles, a huge amount of ships and variety, dozens of alien species, multiple storylines, and so much more. I think my favorite part is how accessible it is to contribute to the game; most things like storylines, quests, and ship outfits can be added or modified with a simple text file. Saves are also plain text files, and can be edited, exported, and imported. There are also tools for creating sprites and the game actively encourages mods, which they call plugins. It’s such a deep and complex game already, and only one storyline is actually complete. It’s available on steam, and a mobile port for Android exists on f-droid

I played this game for weeks and absolutely loved it. I need to pick it back up and see what’s changed over the years.

Amazingly fun game and one of the few that I could just get lost in the role playing.

same here! I regularly play for months and then drop the game for a while. I recently found it on f-droid, which is how I got back into it. I’ve been looking at the wiki and there’s tons of new stuff!

I’ve had a couple of stints in the game, Steam says I’ve played for over 44 hours over the years. Still don’t really understand the deeper mechanics or the story, but enjoy doing random quests and trading with my little fleet (and savescumming when I make a dumb mistake). Had no idea they have a mobile version!

I can understand that. It’s pretty heavy on the “compare the numbers” side of RPGs. If you want to move past the grind and play the game with a badass ship, I recommend looking at the unofficial wiki for a ship you like, and then grabbing the All Content plugin from here
