I was surprised to learn that even “paper” cups have a plastic lining. I thought it was wax, but in hindsight that would be impossible. This means “recyclable” coffee cups aren’t actually recyclable until you separate the polyethylene from the paper, which nobody does.

I hate the taste that metal insulated cups add to coffee, but ceramic travel mugs tend to leak. I finally found a ceramic-lined stainless insulated mug and take it everywhere.

I know this will sound shilly but honestly I know the exact thing your talking about with the metallic taste for the travel mugs. There’s a mug you can buy from a brand called Contigo and for whatever reason it doesn’t give that metallic taste. I’ve had the same mug for 4 years and just replaced it recently because the metal became stained too much.

Ancient Romans used to walk around with a mug on their belt. Most coffee shops I’ve ever been to will happily put your coffee in your own Thermos mug. We just need to make it more normal. I never used to carry a reusable water bottle with me until I met my wife, now it feels weird leaving the house without it.
