I have a choice of 16-20TB disks at these per-TB prices and I can’t decide which to buy for a dual bay NAS.
- toshiba N300 for 20 Euro/TB
- toshiba MG for 16 Euro/TB
- seagate EXOS x18 for 17 Euro/TB
Which one of these is the quietest AND most suitable for a NAS?
I am very confused by Toshibas. On paper, MG drive is a much better drive than N300 but somehow it costs more. Why? N300 is supposed to be the NAS one but what makes it a NAS drive? All info info I’ve found so far paints it in worse light than MG. Exos disk (according to this subreddit) is both the quietest and the loudest of all drives. It’s also the best and the worst for tolerating vibration.
Here is some noise level info on Exos https://nascompares.com/2021/05/28/hard-drive-noise-seagate-vs-wd-vs-synology-and-toshiba/#Seagate_EXOS_Data_Center_Hard_Drives_-_Big_Loud_but_Surprisingly_Affordable
And it’s more about luck there, some drives are working quietly some of them are not. Also, clarify about warranty for all drives. You can be suprised by Toshiba warranty which wouldn’t cover your region.
Thank you. Toshiba warranty in EU/EEA is phenomenal even for individuals.
You are welcome!
You may also find the noise level in the specs for each drive and basically compare their specs to find out the best option for you.
