I am new to this sub and often see people getting 10usd/TB sometimes even less, how do you guys achieve this? Second hand? What are some things or red flags I should watch out for buying HDD from someone other than well known retailers? Sorry if this had been asked a millions times before.
Local ecycler 5/tb
Server Parts Deals. But I’m kinda worrying that the more accessible the information becomes the less good their prices will be. I need to get more drives from them soon lol.
I’ve been buying all of my hard drives from GoHardDrive and Worldwide Product Importers.
I have bought a little over 20x at this point of various sizes (8TB to 12TB) and brands (WD, HGST, and Seagate), a few years later and they’re all still running like clockwork. I also only buy NAS/enterprise grade drives.
You have to carefully read the listings, as some but not all will state a 1, 3 , or 5 year warranty on certain listings.
The hard drives always came with a warranty card that confirmed the warranty period and information on how to file a claim if needed.
This site oscillates somewhere between useless and malicious. Some of the worst scams, on amazon, of all things.
I’m on a home server discord that watches out for deals and often works with ebay sellers to get discounts on drives.
I’ve had nothing but bad luck with “recertified” drives or whatever Amazon calls them. One of the five drives I got off Amazon is still working, and that seller no longer exists. Server Parts Deals has been amazing for used drives. There are also discord and Facebook groups for tracking sellers and stuff.
Do you know reputable sellers that are from Europe? Server part deals shipping to spain is 25-30€
well i guess in US it is easier. good luck trying to find anything close to 20€/TB, the drives here are usually 30-35€/TB. even old drives are going for 20-25€/TB which at this point, is just ridiculous
what do you guys think about direct import(no warranty from the manufacturer, the seller claims zero power on hours)
No warranty = no purchase.
the seller claims zero power on hours
It is possible to reset SMART.
Shucking works great. Basically buying western digital USB drives and taking the drives out. They sell them cheap to get rid of enterprise drive inventory without lowering the prices on the actual drives.
if your worried about red flags or reliability watch the video from this post on buying used:
