So I have two instances of AdGuard Home running on two providers (Vultr and DigitalOcean in case it’s relevant) and I want to know how to make it more secure. I have the following firewall rules in place already:
- Port 22 open for all
- Port 53 open for select CIDRs (my IP and relatives’ IP for router level config, and for a couple of VPN IPs)
- Port 443 open for all
- Port 853 open for all
- Everything else closed for all
Despite this config, my AdGuard Home instances sometimes slow down and stop working. I’m on their 1 CPU, 1 GB RAM and SSD storage plans. What can I do to make the VPS more secure?
Either NextDNS or ControlD would make you job sooooo much easier, and both use adguard lists in some way.
No messing about with VM, no security worries, no maintenance. Can have multiple profiles for all members of the family, works on ay devices you can think of.
I’ve tried both. In fact, I used NextDNS from 28 February 2020 to June 2022 when I switched to AdGuard Home due to very high response times. Tried ControlD and AdGuard DNS as well. But all work poorly with my broadband and my 4G connection (two different ISPs). I can understand why it would be the case with AdGuard DNS since they don’t have servers in my country, but I don’t know why the performance is bad for NextDNS and ControlD even though they have servers here.
