The Nazis were in large part able to come to power because the German social democrats were more concerned with fighting the communists than fighting the right – they considered the main enemy to be “on the left.” They were also the big power block that supported the status quo, perpetuating the conditions that made Hitler attractive to so many people. Most importantly, they were the ones who betrayed the German revolution of 1918, insisting that the new government be formed out of a broad coalition of parties and classes, thus ushering the utter shitshow that was the Weimar republic.

They supported also the treaty of Versailles – the communists were opposed to it – which, as we know was one of Hitler’s big talking points: “shame to the German nation,” and so on. The Nazis really were in a lot of ways enabled by the social democrats, which is why one should think very hard before trusting Bernie-type people.
