Hi,
I’m looking for a small portable device that will allow me to connect to an Airbnb 5Ghz signal and broadcast my own 2.4Ghz signal to connect a baby cam which only works on 2.4Ghz. A signal repeater or booster would be nice to have to. Ability to act as a hot spot by latching onto my iPhone would also be nice for locations that don’t have any wifi at all.
A lot of places I visit annoyingly have poor wifi coverage but more importantly, sometimes only signal 5Ghz band and my baby camera cannot connect to the network at all. The baby cam connects to the cloud.
Thanks
You could probably use any off the shelf consumer wireless router that supports OpenWRT and dual band.
Setup the 5Ghz side to connect to whatever the network source is, and broadcast your own SSID on the 2.4GHz side. I’m currently doing this same thing with a TP-Link AC1750.
Would the router need to be able to go into Wireless bridge mode though? Otherwise I could just plug into the source router LAN if I had access with a cheaper router?
The issue you will likely have is 5Ghz coverage is not as vast as 2.4Ghz, so for the repeater to be close enough to the initial hub to connect on 5Ghz and provide a usable 2.4Ghz band it will just overlap the signal and you won’t gain much or any coverage.
