I normally see the likes of Ronaldo, 2013 or Andriy Shevchenko, 2004 are rated as the most underdeserving Ballon dor winners.

    There were at least five Ballon d’Ors Messi did not deserve. 2010, 2019, 2021, and 2023 on the top of my head.

    2010 - Horrible WC performance, won due to favoritism when it should have gone to WC winners or the Inter treble winners.

    2019 - Ghosted hardcore during the Liverpool 4-0 comeback and went missing in that game. Should have gone to VVD but media darling wins it again despite disappearing in big games.

    2021 - Lewandowski deserved it but Messi won for winning a Mickey Mouse Cup that was gifted to him in Brazil after complaining about corruption during 2019’s Copa America.

    For context: Messi did not take his loss against Brazil very well at all after losing against them in the Copa America in 2019, so they got knocked out in the semifinals and had to play a 3rd place match against Chile. Argentina won that game, but Messi got a red for bullying Medel. Argentina were made to celebrate their 3rd place medals but Messi did not return to the pitch to celebrate with the team, so he went to the media and said there was corruption in the Copa America to make his complaint.

    It is no coincidence that after this statement that Argentina “won” two/three trophies with the NT. Copa America 2021, WC 2022, and a one off match between CONMEBOL winners and EURO winners that was brought back from the dead, evidently enough to reward Messi another trophy. A tournament that had been inactive for over 40 years just to gift Messi another trophy.

    This leads me to the next one:

    2023 - Messi had no reason for winning this one just because he performed in seven games. Seven games where the ref was heavily in favor of Argentina the whole tournament when the Man City treble was more impressive than Argentina winning a rigged WC in a rigged country bid. It was clear that the WC in Qatar would be rigged from the start, if they could bribe officials to let them host, they could just as easily bribe officials to let Argentina win this sham of a tournament. I personally think Haaland was a ghost in every final he played, but he won the treble, and that is a lot more impressive than anything Messi had done this season. Even Mbappe was worthy of the Ballon d’Or because he had to tolerate being 2nd place in this sham WC and despite that he was still the best player in the WC final for scoring 4 goals.
