Hey guys I looked around on Reddit and I think this is the right place to post this. If not I apologize.
I drive a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq hybrid. I’m the original owner. It only has about 40,000 miles on it because I don’t drive it all that often.
While driving it last week, the car stared sputtering and jerking like crazy and the check engine light was flashing. A buddy of mine with a scanner checked the code and it said that all 4 cylinders were misfiring. Figuring it was something my 100k miles powertrain warranty would cover, I brought it to the dealership.
After running the codes, driving it, and testing it, they replaced the coil in one of the cylinders. That fixed the misfire but it was still driving irregularly. They then replaced the cat. Still driving irregularly. (Both of those were covered by my warranty)
Now they’re telling me it’s an issue with the fuel pump due to using contaminated fuel and it’s not covered under any warranty. They’re trying to charge me $2900 for parts and labor which sounds insane to me. I cannot afford that and don’t really know what to do. Is that price normal? My local shop I used to trust with my old car doesn’t work on hybrids so I don’t really know what else to do.
tl;dr - Hyundai trying to charge me $2900 for a fuel pump replacement and I feel like I’m being absolutely ripped off but I don’t know what else to do.
Sounds to me someone accidentally pumped E85, that has a good chance for fouling all your plugs and can muck up your fuel system.
it sounds like this is their third guess, I would strongly recommend another dealer altogether. And don’t tell the next dealer that you just want them to change the fuel pump, you want them to diagnose the issue. That way they are on the hook for the fix. And push for warranty.
They are guessing. They’ve been guessing all along, and wrong each time.
Easy fix. Pull the back seat out and there is a round cut out in the carpet that is where your fuel pump is. Call around and find a shop to do it.
Hyundai is the WORST how the mange to get away with the shit they do to people is beyond me
$375 on Rockauto
Sounds like a FUCK YOU price tbh. Can you cold call any other dealers in your area and ask what a fuel pump replacement would be?
I paid $1700 for the pump on my 2002 Lexus LX470 from the dealership. I would assume that that is a more expensive and heavier job than your vehicle but I’m not sure. Just throwing it out there!
Contaminated fuel? I’m sorry, what?
I would go to a different dealer. Think they are trying avoid hyundai paying for the repairs since warrenty work is usually a fraction of what they charge the customer at the end of the day. I would tell em to blow it out of their ass.
They are feeding you a line. Contaminated fuel is ridiculous. Ask them to explain their diagnosis. My guess is they misdiagnosed the fuel pump like the other repairs they did.
$100 bucks says if you replace all the spark plugs and every coilpack the issue goes away
Don’t get scammed that’s definitely not the issue, get a real scanner and scan it for current codes if it’s still only misfires then do as I advise and it’ll fix it
Yeah I had it scanned with a scanner and it was misfire codes. They’re saying the check engine light’s not even coming on anymore but it’s driving poorly.
The old shop only needs to focus on the engine, it works the same way.
Get another opinion or dealer. The dealer you are going to is incompetent.
Contact Hyundai and try to get a complaint to the regional manager, the dealer sucks at fixing their cars.
High pressure fuel pump or low pressure?
