I feel that when he first burst onto the scene he was this ultra explosive winger who would knock the ball 20 feet out and chase it and ut felt like he was constantly at 100mph

But the more i watch him play now he preserves his explosiveness more… he still is THAT FAST he only uses it when necessary. Far better at linkup play and off ball positioning to get into ideal positions and doesn’t try to take on his man as much as he once did in the past but instead just finds space with out the ball.

What are you even talking about. The dude is 24yo.

CR7 only started to change his style near 30yo. Up until then he was sprinitng up and down the field like a wild horse 25 times a game.

Mbappé is shifting from pure speed and raw talent to a more cerebral game, much like CR7 did. It’s not just about outpacing defenders now; it’s about strategic positioning, timing his runs, and honing his playmaking skills. This transition could very well extend his peak years, a savvy move echoing Ronaldo’s successful adaptation for long-term dominance

He idolizes Ronaldo and got to play with Messi. He knows what he must do to reach the top and stay there for years like they did. I’m excited for him

Pretty much, yeah. Mbappe literally just combined their playstyles might be crazy in the future when he hones it a bit more.

He doesn’t need a bigger club … last season he was playing alongside Messi and Neymar. You can’t beat that! The French league is already at least level with the overrated EPL and in many ways far far superior. The EPL is unfit for purpose and not much more than a Farmers League now. The wealthiest maybe but also the most corrupt and the tackiest. Mbappe is doing just fine as he is … his game is much more cerebral nowadays and he is a big influence during the games to the younger players. He’s the greatest in the world just now and will only improve. Only Real Madrid or Barca could improve his status.

Though I know what you mean, but this is still the first post I am seeing about ‘Mbappe is getting old’

Yeah it does. A few years ago we were talking about him bursting on to the scene and what a prospect he was. Now we’re talking about him refining his game and in a decade we’ll be talking about his legacy and how good he was at his peak haha.

Yeah I remember people use to make jokes about the fact that he’d been 18, 19 etc for what seemed like forever. He’s 25 in less than a month.

This is kind of what happens. The conventional wisdom is that highly gifted players in any sport, from football to basketball to baseball, burn out quickly once their talent dies. But when you study it, it’s almost always the case that the highly gifted players (a) retain some semblance of their gifts (absent injury), and (b) have a much longer time to learn and adapt as their gifts fade.

This is not always true, obviously. But it frequently is. Aging basketball stars turn into wily ball distributors. 30-something baseball stars stop hitting .330 and start cracking 30 home runs with 90 walks. Aging footballers may no longer press, but develop an innate understanding of their role that allows them to do it to the max (see, eg, Messi, who probably hasn’t covered more than a couple of km in a match in three years).

He ia definitely improving and adding more dimensions to his game. Although the PSG project was a failure, playing with superb playmakers of Neymar and Messi together has improved his link up play and game a lot.

He has always been smart and a great passer. At Monaco, some of his best plays were precise crosses and link-up play

Unless Mbappe moves to a better league we could never be able to rate him properly. The only games where he really has competition are in the UCL and Euros/WC. In Ligue 1 even Lacazette scored 27 goals last season, so Mbappe’s achievements there barely mean something.

Interestingly enough he scored 4 goals in 30 EPL games in 21/22 and during all his EPL seasons he scored 10-14 goals.

Even more interestingly, the last two best goalscoring seasons were 27 goals in 35 games in 22/23 and 28 in 30 in 2016/17. Both of this seasons were in Ligue 1, just before and just after Arsenal.

But, I guess you’re totally right, it’s a total coincidence that Lacazette was an average/bad striker in EPL for years (people called him Alexander Lack-of-threat) and once he plays in the Uber Eats league he scored almost 30 goals. Total coincidence, it has nothing to do with the huge difference in the level of football.

Same conversation, how? Haaland left Norway league at 19, played in the Austrian league for a year, joined Dortmund and at 22 he joined the best league in the world.

Mbappe is turning 25 and has been playing in the same (average) league for 8 years now.

I thought it was because PSG plays higher up the pitch under Luis Enrique. He doesn’t have to make constant runs from their own half anymore.
