Hello friends,

I want to upgrade my NVMe from 512GB to 2TB. What NVMe models are considered the best fit for the Deck right now? What are your experiences with upgrade to 2TB?

May not be the cheapest, but Best Buy is currently selling the Western Digital SN770M for $170.

I got it earlier this week, along with an enclosure that can hold a 2230, and did the cloning process upgrade.

Took about 2 hours from start to finish. Went from 64gb to 2tb and am stoked at all the games I can add to it now.

I just order the sn740 2TBdrives. I’ve put them in each deck for friends and family, and they are only £103.

Out of curiosity, what is everyone doing with the extra storage? I have the 512 oled. I have 3 AAA titles on it and a bunch of indies. beyond that, if i “ran out of space” i’d just uninstall and install. What’s the purpose of a 2tb drive if you can’t get your whole library on it anyway?

I have my go-to games that I periodically return to for short gaming sessions or speedrunning, like GTA V, Witcher 3, all Half-Life games, etc. So those games have always to be installed without the option to uninstall them. Add 1-2 current AAA games to that I’m playing simultaneously plus couple of more recent emulated games like BotW or TotK, and your 512GB drive is pretty much full. In my case, 1TB may be sufficient. But if I go through the trouble of upgrading my storage anyway, why not put a 2TB drive inside, just to be sure.

May not be super cheap, but I got the 1TB and the upgraded to Q4 2TB and I’m happy with it.

    Upgraded from 512GB to a Sabrent Q4 2230 2TB.

Everything seems fine. Cant really say much about performance. Seems the same?

There are cheaper ones but imo I think the sn770m is one of the most efficient for a 2tb at 3.3v 1.8A as opposed to most others are 2.5A. just something to take in consideration if looking into the most power efficient. Seems like they only sell them at bestbuy in the US though.

Glad to see this mentioned. I was debating swapping my SSD out and finding this info nicely lined out in a table was surprisingly difficult.

Ultimately decided to go with and SD card for now but will keep the knowledge that the sn770m is most efficient in my back pocket.

Power efficiency is something I wasn’t even thinking about, because I assumed they would all consume the same amount of power. One very important hint, thanks.

To be clear for others, power efficiency is very important because it’s the only metric that really matters for the steamdeck. Without PCIe 4.0 (SD is only 3.0), most SSDs are gonna perform pretty much the same.

The 1TB drive in the OLED deck is 3.3V/2.5A, so as long as a drive is within that spec I feel it’s a safe choice.

770 is 2280, 770M is 2230. WD made it specifically for steamdeck/Ally/etc. 2TB is hard to find in retails. Not sure about other regions but seems only at bestbuy in US.

I just ordered the sn770m yesterday and it should be arriving on Wednesday. Can’t wait to do the swap. I also ordered a 1TB mSD off Amazon and just got that today. I should have enough room to load on a few large games and finally delve into emulation. 😁

Can you plz share the output of “sudo smartctl -a /dev/nvme0” (without the quotes)?

I’m curious about what power states it supports.
