I saw and first heard of these cars on NFS Hot Pursuit 2 back in the day and have always been interested in them. As I got older I was bummed to find out they were never sold in the US.
The Opel Speedster was built on the Lotus Elise (series 2) platform but had a bigger engine and was faster than its Elise counterpart. The Elise was super lightweight and the Speedster as well.
Vauxhall had its own version, the VX220. They made a version called the VXR220 which had more power (220hp) had bigger brakes and better suspension. Not too bad for a car that just barely weighs 2000lbs.
As for styling, the Speedster and VX220 look almost identical but I prefer the way the front grill looks of the VX220 more because I think the Vauxhall badge is cool as hell.
Quite surprising GM never brought it to the US badged as a fiero considering they brought over a lot of other Opels to the US during this period
Toyota mr spyder?
Son of a bitch, that would’ve been amazing.
The closest car we got here in the US that was like the Speedster/VX220 from GM was the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice
It would’ve been a Saturn, like the Astra.
I loved Hot Pursuit 2, the first NFS and racing game I ever played.
I had an absolute BITCH of a time completing the final race with this car to I think? gold star it. I had done every single other race, and it was the last one. And I struggled hard, it was really really difficult.
Fuck this car, if for no other reason lol.
(also the second racing game I ever played, following colin mcrae rally 2.0)
I read the thread title and immediately thought of the game lol. Only reason I know that car exists I spent so much time playing that game.
I remember Jeremy Clarkson loving it.
We have a guy owning one having it parked in our Garage. Its a super small, nimble lightweight Car which i bet feels very analog to drive.
I liked that Video of a Speedster in Action, that Student increased the Downforce dramatically and the 2024 Version of it will blow even this one out of the Water: https://youtu.be/GVLpdbM2ZdI?si=TZVqoDmAZmpS6svP
I had one for two years, you can ask me anything
