2004 trailblazer 4x4 4l60e
i have changed the filter once and dumped the pan and topped off with 5 quarts of fresh fluid twice
i over filled it because i didnt put the dipstick all the way down into the place it goes. so it was off by about 1.5 inches or so of too much fluid.
i just put this tranny in a few months ago, it was from a junk yard.
i suspect that the filter is getting plugged from the clutch material making its way to the pan then plugging the filter.
once it looses power, i can let it sit for a while and it will drive just fine again, shifts fine, torque converter locks at highways speeds.
also, i can drive it around and park it, and just sitting there in park it can plug, as the pump is moving that fluid again and it evntualy plug the filter than i think i hear the pump start to complain.
my question is this: can this be salvaged? if i keep changing the nasty fluid contaminated with the clutch material will i eventually get it all, or have i broke something that is causing more material to come off the clutch plates and eventually they wont be able to grab any more?
i started looking into what regulated the pressure of the system, but i am so sick on digging into this mess, and wearing tranny fluid, that i am about to just go get another junk yard tranny and install it and be done with it.
Automatic transmissions do not have clutches. Have you checked the filters and found “clutch material”? Are you sure your problem is transmission related?
