I am wanting to build a home network and will be outside my comfort zone in doing so!

I have a ton of devices security cameras, Hue lights, TVs, etc, about 65 in total. I also work from home and have teenagers that stream everything.

I have 1 Gig speeds from my ISP and a modem supplied by them.

I have upgraded my router to a NetGear BE19000 WiFi 7.

I will be connecting the TVs, gaming console’s, and my work stations (2) to hardlines.

I am looking for help in building out the network rack and input on what makes the most sense.

I’ve been looking at the StarTech 4u or 6u rack.

I’ll use a vented rack on the top. A patch panel, maybe 24 port. A rack mounted power switch.

I’d also like to acquire a family accessible cloud storage device.

Any input or suggestions would be great! I have budgeted about $1250 for acquiring the needed components.

    Some scoping questions:

    • What’s your comfort level with general system administration tasks?
    • Do you have a day job in tech? Are you comfortable doing things like setting up Docker containers, working with a Unix command line, etc.?
    • Do you have Ethernet runs in your walls?
    • Where in your house do you intend to put the rack? How big is your house?
