Going to pre-order one or the other tomorrow. No gaming, watching x265 10bit movies, general browsing and work tasks through Fedora. It hurts losing the 61 but how much of a difference is the $320? (Already have a 990 Pro waiting.)

I think the only reason to get the 7840U is because you have the money and are happy to invest it in a little bit of performance and comfort. The difference in battery life is probably not that much and for the price difference you could get one or two 99Wh power banks (or buy the larger battery separately) instead.

I ordered a 7640U (hopefully shipping this week), because I don’t need the extra processing power. Planning to upgrade to the 61Wh battery afterwards, though, and hopefully figure out an enclosure to turn the 55Wh into a power bank.

The biggest difference between the two processors is the iGPU, if you’re not getting it for gaming it’s definitely not worth it. If you were getting it for gaming, the performance increase is pretty minor and still probably wouldn’t be worth it.

You won’t be able to watch video in 10bit on the Framework as it doesn’t have an HDR display. It will just downsample to 8bit as necessary
