It is a fantastic vehicle with good range, decent charging, impeccable safety, built-in Android interface and Google Maps, and older models sell for similar prices to the Ioniq 5 / ID4 etc. I test drove it and it is luxuirous, comfy, and just a great and beautiful car. I don’t even see it mentioned almost ever.
I’m guessing perhaps the range, but the 2024 RWD model has around 300mi and AWD 256mi of range. Older ones around 220mi. I’m considering it above all others I’ve driven because it has better ride height and viewing angles for me as I’m tall with a very long torso.
For decades, I have always associated the Volvo brand with safety. But these days, I believe it is almost never listed as such anymore. Maybe because Volvo is owned by the Chinese car company Geely? Before Geely, Volvo was owned by Ford, where its reputation for quality suffered.

I assume because people compare it to something like a model Y, which costs less and most would consider a better vehicle overall?
people on here think a car that gets less than 300 miles, charges at less than 200kw, and isn’t built on a dEdiCaTeD eV pLaTfOrM is pointless
It charges at 200KW on a DCFC, and has nearly 300 miles of range (293 miles on the RWD version). It’s pretty close to the exact specs you’re mentioning.
these are relatively recent improvements, and all model years before this one have been dogged
A Volvo XC40 is fairly expensive. It’s a premium car and you get what you pay for, but people would rather buy a cheap car now and deal with expensive repairs later.
Yes we are in a strange time with EV’s where limited option means that someone will commonly cross shop a Kia, Chevy, Audi and VW which doesn’t often happen with ICE cars. The advantages that luxury makes have don’t stand out as much as everyone looks at range / charging network as holding more importance than build quality, features and dealership experience. My wife wanted a Lexus EV simply because she loved the Lexus dealership/service experience with her old hybrid…. But once she realized it didn’t matter since an EV barely goes back for service we settled on a lightly used Volvo.
Not only that, but I cross shopped BMW, Mercedes, Polestar and Kia and Kia lost on price :o
Expensive cars have expensive maintenance
what maintenance?
Not really. A Volvo is cheaper to maintain than a Tesla. Hyundai and Kia too. Buy cheap, buy twice.
Tesla is filling the battery packs with foam to make then unrepairable.
For $55,000? You can get a long range Model Y for less with better range and charging, even better safety, better driver assistance, better sound system, better screen & navigation
A coworker was renting the XC40 and didn’t like it. I didn’t drive it but it seemed poorly engineered.
- Frunk is tiny
- Really bad backup camera on a small screen
- Not nearly as spacious as a Model Y
- Transmission hump in the back row
About average for a car company’s first EV built on an ICE platform. I do like the exterior look and overall dimensions.
better range and charging, even better safety, better driver assistance, better sound system, better screen & navigation
You aint wrong on some but the Volvo has google maps built in AND a heads up display AND a center display all with maps. Can’t beat that. Tesla is safe but Volvo is the best at safety. Many gripe about phantom braking and Tesla not having 360 cameras etc, and the Volvo beats it there.
You’re right on space, but for my needs (any many others) definitely don’t need that much space. To each their own.
I also would NEVER get a car with a full glass roof here in the mountains. The sun is 4x stronger here than CA and hail is very common here and a huge risk.
Agree on most points.
Navigation is subjective but I absolutely prefer Tesla’s to Google’s or Apple’s, mostly because the screen is so large, I have access to music while I navigate. Charging integration into navigation can’t be beat either.
Having lived without a heads up display I can say I don’t miss it at all.
Lack of USS is a very valid gripe for the Tesla. So stupid for them to remove those.
I have a bald head and have lived with the Model 3 in Arizona. No issues with the glass roof.
Tesla has better safety than Volvo contrary to very popular belief. All of Tesla’s models have better crash ratings that Volvo’s safest car ever. That’s just a fact, Jack.
I found the 360 camera in the ultimatum edition to be excellent.
I considered it a lot myself last year, and earlier this year, but I was more interested in the C40 (more for style, I didn’t mind the loss in space). I ultimately chose something else because the range wasn’t remotely best-in-class and I wasn’t comfortable with what could end up being a very expensive car (service-wide) in 5 years, and I felt like it would just feel outdated over a long period of time (especially since Volvo has more EV’s coming that feel more fresh and compelling).
They are fantastic vehicles, but to me they just aren’t the best option in their category or price range.
I considered it, and bought it. Super happy with it so far!
We have a 2021 XC40 Recharge and love it. It’s a great car. The main drawback as you’ve noted is range and by 2024 standards slower charging. The 2024 models with the 82kWh batteries and new motor configs will largely solve those issues.
Bad ADAS is a reason I would have a hard time considering one.
Unless you get an EX-30 the ADAS system bounces you all over the road from everything I’ve seen AND you generally have to pay more to get it in the first place
ADAS
I heard it was good, where did you read it was poor
I’ve tried it a couple times. It’s bad. The biggest issue is no capacitive steering wheel which makes it really annoying to use on long, straight roads because you need to jiggle the wheel every 10 seconds to let it know you’re there even if you’re holding the wheel. It ping-ponged between the lanes, didn’t take curves very well, and didn’t give a lot of feedback other than a couple very small icons on the driver’s display about what it was doing.
Compared to travel assist on my ID4 or super cruise on my wife’s Bolt, it’s night and day.
In terms of the semi-autonomous highway driving system, Pilot Assist, I haven’t heard the best things about it, at least in the current Volvo models. Ping-pong-y driving, doesn’t handle curves great and deactivates without warning often. Tesla Autopilot, VW Travel Assist, GM SuperCruise and Ford BlueCruise all seem to be superior.
In terms of the other driver assist systems (auto brake, lane keep, etc.) Volvo seems to be just as good as the rest.
Not that big and abysmal efficiency.
For me the value wasn’t there when we were shopping. When we were looking on 2021/2022 it was like $62K delivered for 220 miles of range. I know range isn’t the only thing that matters but that to me felt really bad
Also you had to add on the adaptive cruise control package which just comes standard on other competing cars.
The range was a big concern for me. It’d be fine as a second car though.
I bought one recently and it’s been great so far. It looks good, it’s fast, comfortable, and has good features. Traded in a newer ICE car and also got a 7000 discount so the price was great.
what else have you considered? what makes it better than an Ioniq 5 or a Model Y? You’d really buy it because its beautiful? haha, thats so silly… thats not the #1 reason I got an ioniq 5…
Too pricey for what it is. I ordered one but 61k was too much. Also the different trim levels pissed me off. That being said, I am considering a used one.
Not including adaptive cruise in anything but the top trim is laughable.
Exactly
