Podcast Doug and car guy Doug is way way better than used car salesman Doug.

I know this sub has cooled on him and Matt is well Matt but honestly this was one of the best car related listens for me this year.

I also love it when throttle house goes on smoking tire podcast.

I miss the TST doing One Takes on viewer cars and press cars

YouTube has changed over the years and I’m sure the garage is more stable to maintain and live off of… but it’s just not the same.

I remember the one where a guy brought a 2nd gen Camaro with basically no brakes, and I think that was close to the end of when Matt was doing viewer cars. Hard to blame him.

I honestly disagree. Farrah to me has always been a “no bullshit, straight to the point” car guy who is also rich, and has no issues casually speaking on his wealth when the time is appropriate. I don’t know about his political views, but in terms of purely speaking on cars and what makes them tick, he and Zach are two of the best people to listen to imo.

I’ve listened to him a lot and honestly his political views are very down to earth. He regularly acknowledges that the situation for a lot of people right now is tough, and way too much money is in the hands of very few people.

It can get tough to listen to people casually talk about throwing around 10s of thousands of dollars but thats the car hobby I guess. Matt though takes every opportunity to point out inequality without being too much of a downer imo

It’s not hard to connect the dots when people bring up his political views. Usually they use the excuse of “I listen to this podcast to escape politics”. And like to shout about his hypocrisy. Cause you know he’s a rich car guy who cares about the environment and complains about tax codes benefitting the wealthy.

Usually they use the excuse of “I listen to this podcast to escape politics”.

Terrible take. No, this is not why people don’t like listening to his political views.

I really enjoy his podcasts and videos, but whenever politics comes up it’s by far the worst part about his entire platform and extremely insufferable for two reasons. Note that this is coming from someone who agrees with the majority of his political views too.

            1. His content is not political content so he should stay in his lane unless he puts effort in. If he wants to not do that and talk about politics, honestly that’s not even a problem, but then he should be setting up the stage to actually talk politics. He doesn’t set up the stage for an actual discussion or his viewpoint to be challenged. He just makes strong statements and either has people on who already agree or kind of strong-arms them into not saying anything by being combative with his statements.
            2. Whenever politics comes up, he often has the insufferable attitude that is prevalent on the internet, where he will take the opposing argument in bad faith, and present it as “I’m a good person for having this viewpoint - you’re a bad person if you have the other viewpoint.” It comes across as insecure and also contributes to the current social disaster of radical tribalism due to social media, which is just ironic in of itself to call others bad people while being a person with influence contributing to damaging the fabric of society.

I mean if you want to cherry pick a specific phrasing I used instead of addressing the main point, then you should reconsider what your point even is or if you’re just having an emotional moment and felt the need to have a Redditor take and make a flippant gotcha comment to feel good about yourself.

I don’t like it when Matt has self-righteous and judgmental moments where he attacks people who hold the opposing belief, and not the argument itself, that don’t agree with his stance on certain political topics. It’s disrespectful, and yelling it out in spaces where no one will rebut is cowardly.

Saying “I agree with doing A over B” is respectful to people who believe the opposite and then moving on to his cars topic is fine. Saying “We should do A and people who want to do B are terrible people” is not respectful. It’s his platform and he can say the latter if he wants, but it’s just very obviously distasteful to simultaneously be so adamant and assertive in your stance that you dehumanize others with a different opinion, yet never open himself up for said views to be challenged respectfully as a topic. Simply put, “don’t dish it out if you can’t take it”.

It’s especially unpalatable given that a lot of the time for how judgmental he comes off you can find examples of him being a hypocrite to his own stances, as other people in this topic have given.

If you think this type of behaviour is acceptable just because the stances he’s taking are ones you agree with, then you need to go touch grass and get off social media echo chambers.

One example is he was bragging to Doug in an earlier podcast how he should fly private and how great it is etc. but then complained about others doing so for environmental reasons, he’s extremely wealthy (from a trust fund/parents) but constantly complains about the “wealthy” while doing many of the things he complains about. In the recent podcast he took a jab at people who buy new cars due to environmental impact even though he special ordered a car and had it shipped over that literally burned in the middle of the ocean and had to order another. I think he’s just out of touch and tries to pander

Totally agreed. Yes he is super privileged and comes from big money but at least he acknowledges it. He’s not one of these insanely loaded out of touch pricks who has no concept of struggle or having to work for money.

His niche is definitely expensive performance and luxury cars so maybe that makes his target audience wealthier than most, but I think he still has a good sense for quality and value for money at lower price points.

He’s always been. He’s a nepo baby. One of his first reviews that went viral was a Datsun kit car that resembled a Ferrari 250. Matt told the audience that it was a real Ferrari. He told people that he saw the engine and it’s a v12. Viewers said no it clearly sounds like a 6 cylinder Datsun. Matt said that’s because rhe camera in the exhaust clip was on one side of the car so you’re only hearing 6 of the cylinders. People continued to rip him saying he’s clueless and drove a Datsun with a 6 cylinder. Matt eventually admitted he was misled and lied to everyone about seeing the engine. Then he did a dirty delete and wiped the video from the internet

Thats pretty cringe tbh. I honestly can’t stand people like that. Its common among alot of influencers across all hobbies and activities. So many dudes are insecure and overcompensate. Never saw him as someone who was experienced at the track, just a guy who likes those really weird cars.

I feel like within the car community people resort to track driving as the ultimate way to experience a car and that your opinion is invalidated unless you have track driving experience. The fact that he bragged about tracking his Ford GT and his Carrera is hilarious becuase nobody in their right mind would track those cars and really push them hard.

Lol nobody tracks those cars. They aren’t good cars to track because they are so old and valuable, that it simply doesn’t make sense even if you have stupid money. He probably just pushed it hard one lap and called it a day lol. The people that track those cars do them in sanctioned events like how people will race the old classic Ferraris. You’ll never see a Ford GT on an open track day lol.

He got going on with a guy he didn’t know who happened to be a retired European racing champion and it was pretty funny watching him talk down to a guy about high performance driving knowing who they both were. Oliver just stood there quiet and humble and took the wagging.

In the last few years Doug has started making videos on the car market in general. Those are gold and he gets it right in a way I don’t see anyone else even attempting. Videos like what is the collector car market cap. Any of the videos discussing Ford’s decision to drop cars. There’s a playlist on the channel called garage talk. That’s where the talent is.

The talent is not in his reviews. They’ve always been bad, shallow, inconsistent and worst of all he doesn’t know how to drive. I think he’s gotten big because children are YouTube’s largest audience and they love his channel. Luckily he’s continued to grow and capitalize on this success

That, and watching him drive in heavy traffic and pretend to objectively review a sports car’s handling or acceleration. He’d be going in a straight line on the freeway and move the wheel a little, or take a right turn from zero as he talked about it lmao.

I don’t see him as some overly skilled driver but he has addressed that he often does his spirited driving off camera and the driving segments are just a stage to talk about the impressions. I believe it’s something Matt Farah has addressed as well, some audiences don’t take well to pushing a car hard on the road especially as it often involves unsafe driving. Plus with Doug it’s kinda hard to convey fast driving in his format as well.

I think that part is realistic though, it’s important how cars feel on normal roads too.

I don’t really care for Doug’s reviews anymore either but he’s still a great car nerd. This is the ideal setting for him. I prefer him on podcasts over his videos.

As someone who is a dozen or so years older than Doug, it cracks me up when he goes on about some quirk or feature that an “old” car has and says something like “I have never seen this” when it is just a normal '80s car thing.

Nope. Still gets things wrong while simultaneously chastising the manufacturer for “not including this” while it is included, he/the writers just never read the manual or sat in the car for longer than 10 minutes.

All I can tell you is first-hand experience with Matt Farah. My 12-year-old son and I drove up to see Matt begin at tire rack in South Bend Indiana for the one lap of America. Son and I happen to bump into Matt and just say hi because we had seen him on the car show.

Didn’t know him before that really much. Just got a selfie with him, and said thanks. He said hey wait a second he goes why don’t you just hang out with us until we head out? So that was pretty cool. Nice enough guy.

He is solid. Never met the dude but probably had like 10 conversations with him online. I don‘t like Dougs content but I have to give credit to him as well for considering and responding to feedback.

Farah and Zack put in so much effort to give the audience exactly what they wanted, listening to feedback, elaborating if there was a reason they couldn‘t give you what you wanted, and acting on it.

Maybe that‘s part of the reason why I hate youtube, content creators are out there servicing every need of their audience and youtube is like „yeah but have you seen this top 10 video that involves no original content whatsoever, that‘s quality content we need to recommend right there“.

This is categorically false. Youtube is constantly trying to recommend shit that you explicitly don’t want. I suspect they try to show you things that make you angry because anger = engagement on the internet.

For example. I have said “do not recommend” and “dislike” every single time I get joe “misinformation” Rogan content. And yet no matter how hard I try it sneaks back in through the algorithm after a few weeks. Same with theo von. I also can’t get rid of breaking bad / better call Saul for some reason.

and “dislike” every single time I get joe “misinformation” Rogan conten

Don’t dislike it - that’s engagement and requires clicking into the video. Just say don’t recommend the channel and after a while it’ll get the hint

Not true at all. And I‘m not talking about my personal feed I‘m talking about the fact that a billion dollar corporation is able to pretend this garbage algorithm is the best they can do.

And even if the average user does click on that content, how braindead do you have to be to recommend top 10 compilations over channels which put a serious budget into original content specifically for your company, don‘t make me laugh.

It sais the algorithm is pushing: „Relevance, Engagement, Quality“

And what relevance is, that‘s entirely up for Youtube to interpret.

Now if you‘re able to login to a computer with no search history and straight face tell me the stuff on the trending pages is relevant when that‘s supposedly their number 1 criteria then you‘re either completely out of your mind or you‘re getting a feed that‘s entirely different from the one they push in Germany.

it’s anecdotal for sure, but my homepage is entirely videos I might genuinely watch. 0 Drama, 0 listicles, 0 bullshit.

If you don’t have any watch history, yeah it’ll be lowest common denomenator crap because they don’t know what you’ll engage with.

It’s not about “the average user” it’s about you specifically - given we’re talking about specific audiences getting or not getting served content from that channel.

Matt reviewed my car a few years ago for a one tank video.

Obviously I don’t know him on a personal level but to me he was the same in real life as he is in his videos/podcasts. Talked cars and whatnot with me and all the others at the shoot that day till he had to take off.

      Definitely a nice, cool dude.

This was a great episode. Watching it feels like sessions I’ve had googling obscure cars with my car buddies, of which there are not many so it’s fun to watch others vibe out in a similar fashion. I’m a fan of the crew shows but this was one of their best in recent history.

“THIS…” Doug makes me want to shove the handle of a wooden spoon in my pisshole. “Just chilling on a podcast or shooting the shit about cars” Doug is A-OK. I wish he’d built his fan base and video style off how he actually is and not on his dorkwad persona.

Right? I never could stand his car videos, and generally skip over things that mention him on here.

But he popped up in a Doughnut video where he and the guys were guessing the auction price of some cars. He seemed totally different
