I went into the dealership for the 40k mile service which involved some fluid changes, tire rotation and brake wear test. I walked out of there $1300 poorer, after they nickel and dimed me for a bunch of other things that came up during the inspection. I even turned down some of the “suggested services.” I won’t be going back there again. Anyone else get this treatment?

    Hate the game not the player. The tech probably made a few pennies on the dollar for that and another couple bucks in parts and fluid. The dealer markup is insane. They charge $170 an hour and the tech gets like $25-30. Shit on a tire rotation the service advisor makes double what the tech does. It’s a really shitty business.

    I had this happen at two different Toyota dealers by me. Once the car died I bought a Subaru.

    LOL similar experience. I bought my car from autonation in Austin in July. Used 2017 4Runner limited. Had to bring it in due to rodent damage on a fuel injector wire. They gave me a print out for $5k in services that the vehicle needed. I will never take a vehicle back to a stealer ship, all parts for the recommended maintenance came out to $300 on rock auto. Learn to do it yourself if you have the tools

    This is their business model. They make their profits off of excessive fees, hourly labor costs that don’t even necessarily go to the technician, and drumming up unnecessary “repairs” that they make excessive profit marginal off of.

    If you feel uninformed when you find yourself in these situations you should bring a trusted friend with you that is handy with cars, or learn to say no to everything that isn’t critical. If you go in for an oil change but they try to upsell you on 10 other things, just stick to your guns until you can have a friend review it all with you.

    I don’t believe so. Depends on what services since you didn’t list them. But our Highlander went in for oil change, and they let us know the next time we need to get the diff, fluid, and some other stuff done for the 30k maintenance. Which makes sense at by then 3 1/2 years and 25k.

    I have a story not so far off from that! My sister’s 2020 Corolla battery died so she had to get it jump-started, since the battery was dead some messages pop up on the screen. Her husband and her took it in to the stealership because of that. They said the car needs a new battery and “injectors cleaning”, her husband said he can change the battery at home. Then they said if they don’t do the injectors cleaning the car might have that message and said can’t do it at home. So they agreed. The bill was almost $700 for a new battery and the “injector cleaning”. They got the lower end battery so it costed like 200 and with labor was something like $370-400 total for the battery. Guess what the “injector cleaning” was? They literally did nothing but added a bottle of Techron and tried to charge an additional $300. Mind you the car was a couple hundred miles past 30k miles so no warranty for the battery. And the car drives really smooth ever since not like it was rough or anything plus it’s only has 30k miles. After some complaining they ended up lower the bill to $450.

    If they had known or at least asked me beforehand about the message that pop up, they would have only spent like 150-200 for a new battery. The service manager fear-mongered them so the stealership can make more money.

    Man, I have a really good relationship with my Toyota dealer for service. I wonder more and more if that’s rare these days?
