#What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a federated social network. In the simplest terms, it’s like anyone can create their own “reddit” (Lemmy instance). Within each instance, you can create custom “subreddits” (Lemmy communities). However, you can subscribe, post, and comment in any “subreddit” in any “reddit”. This community is hosted on lemmy.world, but you can join even if your account is registered on lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, or any other instance.

Think of it like a Discord server. You join a Discord server (Lemmy instance) that may have a set of rules or specific ethos. Within that server are channels (Lemmy communities) about various topics. The difference is unlike Discord, you can create your own channel (Lemmy community) even if you’re not a server admin!
