I’ve not been as excited about a piece of tech for a long time. I’m trying to save a few bucks on this somewhat expensive machine and have some questions, which I hope you might be able to answer. Thanks!
I’m planing on bringing my own RAM and storage. Framework lists DDR5 SO-DIMM 5600 as compatible, however they do recommend avoiding XMP. Most modules I found do have XMP. Do they just mean to disable XMP? Any ideas or recommendations?
I’m also hesitant to buy the 180W charger, even though it seems reasonalibly priced. I’m not buying a grafics module just yet, but might in the future and 180W might not be enough power by then. I only want to buy once and couldn’t find any higher powered ones on amazon (EU). I only found one 140W charger from UGREEN, which is a brand I’ve never heard of. Another option would be, to buy a 100W charger now and another one later, but I want to reduce cost and e-waste.
One last question is concerning the input modules. Do I understand it correctly, that both the numpad as well as the macro pad can be used for custom key functions and macros?
What they mean by avoid XMP is that their default clocks(usually some jedec spec) arent the advertised speed. Laptop ram typically follow the jedec timings, so you want ram whose jedec timings are of jedecs 5600 frequency specs. By default, ram speeds are with xmp off.
As for chargers, the USB-C EPR spec is brand new. I dont think theres any charger on the market using it as of thr moment. Your choice is to buy the 180 or buy the 100w now and a 230w later

For RAM, I would preorder without memory. I would wait until Framework updates their knowledge article on memory compatibility before buying RAM from a 3rd party (https://knowledgebase.frame.work/en_us/what-dram-memory-is-supported-by-framework-laptop-16-ryS2Xr3ch). Since the FW13 is also a 7040 series chip, I expect them to update this FW16 article well before the FW16 ships.
I think the charger is pretty cool and will be one of the first of it’s kind. I would have no issues ordering that since it’s fairly priced and will be useful for almost all USB-C devices in the foreseeable future.
I did not see the knowledge base, just the FAQ. Good call. The price point of the charger is excellent, I agree. What I would have loved is a second port, maybe USB-A to support older devices out of the box. But I guess an adapter will do.
I would imagine they don’t recommend XMP as that’s for Intel processors and the FL16 only has the AMD option for now. I don’t see why you couldn’t use XMP modules if you don’t enable it but if someone knows better I’d love to hear why.

that charger, idk if the usb is anywhere near 330w and the main adapter, i dont see a usb-c main connector
USB4 can support like 240w max, so unless the now deleted message used something like a barrel plug (which wouldnt work with framework) its fake
yeah, it was a brick with a barrel plug with two usb c ports that didnt say how many watts for said usbc. only the barrel plug was rated. aka, probably wouldbt work
