Can you participate in a thought experiment with me? The posts warning about fascism are good, but I’m wondering what you think fascism actually looks like. Give a thought, and list what it looks like. Don’t just say “the end of democracy.” List what the concrete changes will be and make it local. “In my town/city/county/state the following will happen…” Think about it before replying. Not just for #BlackMastodon .

I come from a fascistic state. I can tell you exactly what it looks like. Everybody’s terrified. All of the time. Some are terrified of the government, but most are terrified because of government propaganda. Every person who’s strange in any way is a threat to be eliminated. Violence is everywhere bubbling just under the surface. Everywhere are calls for unity. You keep your divisive thoughts to yourself. You become a jumble of secrets >> @[email protected]hiding behind a conformist façade. You lie to everyone. Your parents, your loved ones. No one must know you’re different. There’s always an emergency. You don’t have time to relax. There’s no time for maintenance, for taking care of yourself or others because the threat is ever present and always takes priority. You work all the time because work is always in a state of emergency as well. You don’t talk to your colleagues about politics. >>

You try not to talk to them at all. Who knows what side anyone is on. Every day is the same. Every person is the same. Except when the war (there’s always a war) gets really bad, or comes too close, and then the fear, the hatred, the violence is even closer to the surface, and you hide yourself even deeper.You think you should be brave and fight for your freedom, but you’re alone, with no one to trust, and no one you can open up to.
That is fascism.

As fascism rises,
In my suburb the following will probably happen -
More “othering” of people, more intolerant statements (Eg on my suburb’s Facebook groups) about for example homeless/unemployed people, and with higher ratio of upvotes on such statements.
Less nuance permitted — “you’re either with us or against” attitude, less shades of gray
Racist dog-whistling statements, become less subtle and greater in volume

Forced vaccination. Concentration camps. Children taken from their parents. Social credit score basic income. 15 minute cities. Ban on meat. Ban on home grown farming. No right to drive your own car. Flying only for elite. Vaccine passport everywhere. AI “Factcheck” and report on all conversation text and spoken.No more memes 😭
Basically all the things that socialists wish for.

But if you have any rational thought left, you should try and think about how the people who support fascism create concentration camps, take children from their parent and make it impossible for average income people to drive or fly now. Not in some imaginary future you are thinking of. No need to respond because you are blocked.

Coastal access laws will be gutted to allow exclusive beachfront mansions. No cops will wear cameras, ever, but Ring doorbells will be mandatory. Masking in public will be prohibited, even for health reasons. Court filing fees will soar, and all trials will be bench, not jury. Only country music concerts will be allowed in public venues (really).

I’ve described #SanDiego as a militarized border town and I think that would become much more pronounced and obvious.
The thin blue line crew, which is already an under-current, would morph into vigilantes, terrorizing the liberal coastal neighborhoods, and disenfranchised communities, without fear of repercussions.

Public school teachers within inner cities who have NO HELP, against BILLION DOLLAR backed MIND VIRUSES spreading via algorithm that incentivize children to MURDER EACHOTHER. Public school teachers in “red-zones” that can’t make ends meet. The people the government sold crack for, being positioned in an adversarial manner financially & politically, against the people the government sold crack to…by the government. 🎭

Their US born children will be left without parents or forced to join their parents in a country they don’t know. Me and my entire family will be targeted with threats or real violence by neighbors or others who know our background and where we stand. Our property will also be targeted. Won’t be able to travel to see family even if we don’t cross the border because checkpoints will expand.

If things keep going on its current course, more capitalist money would flow in to keep autocrat powers ruling over working class Americans.
Choices would be taken away either financially (blue) or idealogically (red).
More rights will be pulled back as the systems in place will get worse and worse due to its need for more money.
Propaganda is already running rampant and it’ll get worse as more people will fight against the system.

As a Black man, I’m already impacted by the policies that they already have in place.
As a Black woman, my wife is being impacted by recent changes in policy.
My son, a Black child on the Autism spectrum will never know peace.

It’s not much of a thought experiment when you see that Fascism has darkened the doorsteps of the Black and Brown communities for centuries.
@[email protected] @[email protected] Let’s not forget that just yesterday Nancy Pelosi said the FBI should investigate pro-Palestinian protestors for being agents of Russia.
@[email protected] @[email protected] Folk perceived to be outside of accepted society will run the constant risk of being subject to vigilante violence, imprisoned, and enslaved by the state and its allies.
The state will exert more direct control over the various police forces. Lethal outcomes will become more common.
Lists of folk with unacceptable politics will be developed by, or encouraged to be developed by, the state. Hiring such folk will be discouraged and penalized.
@[email protected] @[email protected] Anti-state terrorist and assassinations will occur, probably by mail bombs and drones. Some of them will be performed by factions of the state. In the wake of notorious incidents, criminal penalties for behavior describable as anti-state will increase, including more routine and speedy executions. Family and friends of victims will be punished, probably incidentally and opportunistically, not by policy.
@[email protected] @[email protected] The electoral system will be partially, selectively commandeered by the state, sufficient to keep up illusions of democracy long after the need for such pretense will have effectively passed, in fact.
As climate change wreaks havoc on agriculture, food shortages will result, but imposed selectively on partisan cities. Farm work will become more formally enslavement as mechanical agriculture becomes less cost-effective.
@[email protected] @[email protected] Food and job riots will occur in several cities and be brutally suppressed, with mass casualties. One or more state capitols will be bombed, and torture of political prisoners will become routine and acknowledged, even celebrated. Formal public schools will be curtailed in duration and efficacy. Service academies will become widespread, as well as punk community education. Women will be relegated to child care but also work menial remote jobs.
