I think the recent popularity of the Deadpool trailer (365 million views in 24 hours which is the new record) shows that people aren’t actually tired of superhero movies. Reading comments from folks, it’s more that they’re sick of cookie-cutter movies made by people who aren’t fans of the source material. There’s a difference between a superhero movie produced by corporate committee for profit and one made by a team of enthusiasts who know and respect the established IP.

Ryan Reynolds is actually a great example of this. People hated his first appearance as Deadpool in the Wolverine movie. They hated his Green Lantern. Ryan hated both, and worked really hard for many years to get the version of Deadpool he loved onto screens. Suddenly people were big fans of the universe-accurate, fan-made Deadpool movies and I think people are really looking forward to the new one.

I’d add to this: people who aren’t otherwise into the source material will also think that most superhero movies are just cookie-cutter movies. It can take a lot to elevate a superhero movie to a space where people not interested will care. The most recent Joker film comes to mind, but films of that quality are very few and far between.

And indeed, the whole point of superhero IP in the eyes of the c-suite is that story work is done. So it’s like a push-pull situation where either the push or pull is winning out right now.

Edit: and another way to say mostly the same thing: all superhero movies are a rehash of previous IP, just in a different medium. I think a lot of folks just want new stories.

My friend is a huge comic fan with thousands in his collection and even he says Marvel has mostly sucked since End Game so I’m not so sure familiarity with the source material is a dividing line.

I agree with you, just wanted to throw it out there that even some super fans hate what they’ve been doing

I’ll say this, I’d rather watch an hour long episode of a series every night than a movie every few years. I’ve been watching all the Marvel a And dc shows but not the movies so much because I don’t often find the time to watch a whole movie in a sitting like I do.

So now that end game happened and the dceu shit the bed, I much rather watch their tv shows like Wanda vision and peace maker, than a movie

In the same way, I think The Boys is much better as an episodic series than it would be as a movie.
