Starting in about 2010, I was shooting stunning 1080p video with a Canon Rebel T2i manually focusing with a Canon 17-55 F/2.8 EF-S. I used it primarily for capturing family events, and the quality was unmatched.

More recently, I realized that it’s just too much kit to carry around, and I’ve gotten tired of manual focus and having to worry about overheating. Three years ago, I picked up a used Canon HF-R800 1080p camcorder and really liked the ease of use and long optical zoom. Last year, I got a DJI Osmo Pocket and was blown away at how good the 4K video looked coming out of such a small camera.

I’m still not impressed with the lack of zoom and poor low light performance of the Osmo though, and I think it’s time to upgrade the HF-R800.

Here are my thoughts:

• Canon Vixia G70 - Newest model out there. Easy to use (and I’m a Canon fanboi), but small sensor = poor low-light performance.
• Sony AX700 - Pricier than the Canon, but can be had used for around the same price if you’re patient. 1" sensor = great low-light performance.
• Sony AX100 - Not quite as good/recent as the AX700, but still 1" sensor and can be had $2-300 cheaper.
