Hey folks-

I have the following situation. I used to work for a remote-company but I was based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Argentina is famous for not having an official apple store and the customs are a nightmare. Basically nothing that gets mailed (especially technology) arrives to the right destination without paying 100% ridiculous tax.

When I joined the company, instead of my employer sending me a Mac I proposed to buy a brand new one from a reseller and expense it instead to avoid any potential issues with customers. That worked completely fine but the IT manager made me install JAMF in the device.

I left that job 2 years ago and when I left I was told that I had to ship the Mac back to the HQ. Because I didn’t wanted to be liable for a USD 3.000 MacBook, I’ve requested them to send me a written consent that they were fully conscious of the risks of sending the mac via a courier. Nobody replied. I’ve got quoted USD200 from FEDEX to ship it back which I requested to be paid to me before shipping and again… I was ghosted by the company.

Long story short- I still have the Macbook in my possession and it has been sitting on my drawer for 2 years now. I don’t want to use it as a personal computer as I fear at some point someone is going to block it.

I’m currently considering two alternatives:

  1. Gift the Mac to my girlfriend’s sister. She recently started studying Graphic Design and she’s not capable of buying a Mac as they’re ridiculously expensive in Argentina (+2 years of her salary). For this i’d need to wipe it out and remove the JAMF so that she doesn’t have a problem in the future.
  2. Apply to the Apple Trade In where Apple quoted me ~600 USD and replace it with a new piece of hardware. I don’t really need anything that’s why I’m hesitant to take this option…

Happy to hear thoughts and feedback from the forum.

PD: For the Apple Trade In, I do have the invoice. Not sure if Apple requests any documentation or how that works.
