I know why. It’s because in 2012 Earth’s moon was destroyed.

Some aliens destroyed our moon and we all watched it get closer and closer to Earth and then start to break up. We all watched in a state of stupefied terror as the chunks slowly, gracefully separated. They rained down on the surface, throwing up waves of magma. Those orange curtains in the sky were fully real, and yet we could not believe.

Then blue portals opened up everywhere and scanned us. We all died, and then woke up in this re-creation of Earth.

The memories of that day were erased consciously, but at a deep implicit memory level we all share a common trauma of the inexplicable, un-stoppable growth of that sphere in our sky.

I mean, that’s one theory as to why it creeps you out.

I can’t say how I know this, other than that I “remember” it in glimpses as if it were a dream. I’ve encountered other people who have a similar “almost memory” of the moon low in the sky, beginning to split open. The utter helpless horror of unstoppable events happening in the sky.
