I was looking around for some GPS equipment for my motorcycle and came across some dirt cheap (in comparison) cycling computers with GPS tracking. This got me wondering, has anyone tried it? Since I don’t need nor want all that fancy stuff like tracking, consumption, points of interest, etc, and just want a map, a route and something to show the way, would that be a good idea?

Did you already try phone apps? I personally use an app called CaliMoto. It lets you plan routes and record your ride. Or you could just record you movement without planned route to follow. One other apps Rever and Ride With GPS.

I did, I think calimoto is great. The issue is that my phone gets really hot and it deteriorates the battery really fast - not to mention the issues I may have with the camera and vibrations.

Maybe the solution will be to buy a cheap phone as my GPS instead…

It can work. I remember one of the more popular items to add a few years ago was a bicycling device that just has a single arrow pointing to the next waypoint/street turn. If you like the look, use it.
