The recent vote in Ohio is just one of a string of cases where voters show they mostly support abortion access to some extent (1). Polls show the same. (2) So why do Republicans (specifically Republican politicians, not necessarily Republican voters) keep trying to do something unpopular?

My (perhaps cynical) view of Republican politicians is that they’re the “do anything to win” party. They would take any stance and pull any trick if it would give them a better chance of winning. So why are they so stuck on a losing issue?

When somebody powerful does something perplexing, my guess is usually “because money”. Is that the case here? I’m not that informed about how politicians get their money…

Yes, but in a much larger way. In Texas alone, changes to the law last year have resulted in 9,000 excess births compared to before. This is a future source of tax revenue and labor. Many states are losing young people to better jobs, opportunity, and quality of life and this helps slow that loss.

Cities, states, and countries get their money from taxes. Sales, income, or property tax paid by people and companies goes directly to pay for things like firefighters, park benches, and health and safety inspections.

Politicians get their money from companies who want to change laws in their favor. Different companies support different candidates depending on their needs.

Nobody has honestly given you an answer beyond, hur, dur, Republicans are bad. What some don’t want to admit is that a lot of GOP voters believe a fetus is a baby at conception. Full stop. They see abortion as someone ending a life. And there is nothing you can do to reason with them.

I’m a pro-choice Republican. I draw the lime at anything over 12 weeks, though. And I don’t like that some people use it as a form of birth control. Are condoms not cheap enough? They are cheaper than an abortion. So, why not use that?

BTW, read up on Margaret Sainger, the founder of Planned Parenthood. She legitimately was a racist with quotes to prove it.

EDIT: I also belive in abortion after 12 weeks in case of a medical issue with the mother.
