We had mice in our house a few years back and got a pest control bloke in. The poison that is used essentially gives the pests very bad fever, so much so that they seek a cooler area, outdoors generally, and they die there.
Never had a smell issue or found any caracases in the ceiling cavity.
Hope if they do do something it isn’t poison. I’ve had to live with the resultant stench and you really don’t want that.
