There is a discussion on Hacker News, but feel free to comment here as well.
In Switzerland for example the ISP is required to keep a log of your activity. The VPN provider however does not have this obligation by court rule. Reuters article
If you don’t trust a VPN provider in a country with privacy-friendly laws and a proven track record, then use Tor and start your own ISP, I guess.
But if Tor is too slow, you can layer multiple VPN providers, if they accept anonymous payments. Like Mullvad. Then you get a reasonable amount of obscurity to your internet pathway.
But I disagree if the original poster, I know for a certainty my local ISP is selling my browsing data flow to date of brokers. Hi Comcast! Given it’s a certainty using a VPN doesn’t put me in a worse position, there’s a net positive chance my VPN provider is not as sucky as Comcast.
I live in a third world country with a lot of restrictions and probably a lot of spying on citizens. I rather trust a VPN than my ISP.
At a personal level, I get very annoyed with arguments that are basically, it’s not perfect therefore you should do nothing.
It feels like a disingenuous point to debate from.
