And it’s happening in a lot of other countries - here in the UK the political culture is more right-wing than any time since at least the Second World War (and that’s saying something).

It’s Late Stage Capitalism: in order to continue business as usual in the face of all reason and evidence of its devastating effects, capitalists look to authoritarianism and fascism to ensure capitalism’s continuation.

Things are bad in the UK but I think we’re actually quite lucky in some ways. The Tories are in genuine electoral trouble because of our sticky inflation, Liz Truss’s little act of economic arson, and on top of that Partygate which massively discredited our institutions but even more so the Conservative leadership in the public eye. Brexit turned out to be a disaster too, and a lot of prominent Tories were kicked out a few years ago for not supporting a hard Brexit so it’s really only the hardline Brexiteers or those who sold their souls to them left. On top of that the housing situation is worse than it’s been in living memory unless you’re retired and the Tories have presided over it all. I think this might be as wounding to them as 1979 was to Labour.

Imagine if Labour had won in 2017 or 2019. It would be them and not the Tories facing electoral oblivion and we’d probably see a real headbanger like Suella Braverman or Jacob Rees-Mogg running the country with a cabinet of UKIP lookalikes.
