Sorry this is super late. I’ve been busy and forgot to post at the same time as the frugal thread.
I also haven’t been able to do much gardening. The window boxes don’t hold much, I’m struggling with fatigue and the carrots I’m hoping would set seed are being eaten! Perhaps in future I’ll be able to do more.
Have you got any plans for your garden coming into spring?
Just planted seeds for sugar baby watermelons last Sunday been. These seeds are from the last set of watermelons I had last year, so this is a first for me where I actually use seeds from fruit I have eaten. I still have heaps of seeds left over, so I am now setting up another raised garden. So I will probably have double, if not triple the harvest from last year.
Lemon tree flowers have nearly all been exhausted, so I think I will be getting a large batch of lemons. My other citrus trees are starting to flower now, so not sure if they will be covered in flowers and bees soon, of if they will be a bit more conservative. The pineapple orange I have planted is still really small, so I am pinching the flower buds off of it so it can focus on growing up. Maybe next year.
Setting up a new garden in the middle of my back yard. Going to focus on planting natives in it. I get three free trees from my local council every year, so that will be the focus for this little garden. Still pretty ugly at the moment, haven’t gotten rid of the grass yet, so will post photos once it is complete.
Overall, exciting start to Spring. Been a really hot end to Winter and start to Spring here in Queensland, so all the plants are getting excited and flowering heaps.
Fatigue is absolutely flattening me but I went out and weeded my little window box pots.
There were tufts of grass taking root so I relocated them to the dead spots in the cat grass pot. (I have a few on rotation - when the current pot of cat grass by the bowl gets too grazed down it goes outside to recuperate and the other one gets moved back inside.)
Almost all of the tops on the carrots are gone so I don’t think there will be any seeds to harvest. Wondering if I should dig the roots out to plant baby spinach or just leave them in there to compost.
I wish I could grow stuff in my backyard and not be limited to tiny pots… but I just don’t have the energy or strength to deal with the creeping grass that would only grow back under the fence from the neighbours yard. It would choke out anything I planted.
I’d have to get organised and do the soil test as well to ensure it was safe to grow edible produce.
Perhaps dig up the soil to aerate it, made more difficult by having put weed mat down in the past (the grass just grew right through) and old buried rubble from the builders that I couldn’t dig out. I’ve never been that strong and am just becoming more disabled.
I’d love a Meyer lemon tree in a pot but that would be a hassle to move.
I saw some largish plastic pots on the footpath yesterday and the remains of a bag of manure so went to check if they were still there… they were so I guess fair game?
Carrying the pots back sucked, felt like I was going to puke, and I don’t know what to plant. But not being able to do anything productive is making my brain eat itself.
Perhaps they might be big enough for individual vegie plants of something. Zucchini? Mini pumpkins? I don’t have any stakes or the seeds.
I think I’m going to push some spinach seeds in the gaps between the carrots. Perhaps pull the half eaten ones up to make room.
