So I’ve (M32) have had to move back with family temporarily while looking for a place to live and my mum (aged 66) has recently become a real Sky News hardliner. When I come home from work she’s got Andrew Bolt or similar on the TV and I usually listen in to what’s being said on the program.

As far as I can tell the so called “news” that gets spouted on this channel is straight up propaganda and rage bait, designed to anger and outrage. Nearly every story they discuss is an opinion piece and it’s usually formatted as: "X person of opposing ideology has said “Y”, they’re dumb and what they said is dumb. We say “Z” this is smart, you should agree with us because we’re smart and this would make you smart by proxy, agreeing with our opposition would make you dumb.

The entire machine of Sky News basically exists to viscously slag off non-Liberal/National politics. I tried to point this out to my mum but she told me that Sky News reports “what’s actually going on” and that the other news outlets are run by “Lefties and communists”.

I’m not saying that other news outlets don’t have their own political agendas, but no one can seriously be watching this stuff and think that they’re getting a clear take on reality. Admittedly, I don’t see daytime news or the morning news. I exclusively see the evening programs.

If anyone on this sub watches this news for real please fill me in on what you get out of it and why you watch it. Genuinely interested to hear how people think.
