Me waiting for Olive to become stable:
Does anyone know how to donate to olive? I can’t find it anywhere
I get a little aggravated with Kdenlive’s interface sometimes, but functionally it is a real heavy hitter.
Is there an easy way to add text in Kdenlive? I’ve been using it for like a year and still can’t really figure it out. 😩
Or a better tool for the job?
Title frames are pretty inadequate for anything other than a home movie, in my opinion; though they’re the in-software topmost solution. I don’t think I’m alone in that notion.
Personally, I usually just work up an image overlay in other software, like Krita if you want something from the KDE set, or Blender, or some other tool, and export it in a transparent-background format that Kdenlive can treat as a clip, like EXR or PNG; then I overlay it in the timeline. It works fine for videos and gives you a lot more stylization options.
If I remember correctly text is an effect in kdenlive. It can be overlayed over any video.
Yes, but sadly only one line at a time. No multiline support (yet)
Huh, wierd. I remember I somehow did two lines in GOST Type A font.
Or a better tool for the job?
Olive is really good now that you can edit text on top of the video preview
Thanks, I’ll check it out!
I would switch if it had multiline text without those annoying tittles
Heh, you said tittles.

Yeah, I get that. It’s quite annoying, but I haven’t had any other problems than that
Personally I use the free version of Devinci Resolve. Have you used both and how do they compare?
I wouldn’t mind using it, but the lack of H264 support on linux really kills that idea
Of course I could export every clip to a different format, but that would require me to** export every clip to a different format** and I’m lazy.
Yeah, I liked DaVinci Resolve but that’s the sole reason that killed it for me too. I ended up paying $80 for Lightworks when it went on sale, and I love it. It just works.
Kdenlive wasn’t quite there for me personally yet in terms of workflow the last time I tried it. I keep checking in on it though, because I know it will get there.
State when was the last time you tried couz. Mf be saying “last time I tried x” and it turns out it was 5 years ago. FOSS development and new technologies are at its all time high and it won’t stop increasing
I hear you, I see that happen all the time with peoples outdated opinions on Linux. I tried 6 months ago, I was already using Davinci Resolve then tried the FOSS options, then tried Lightworks and decided to pay for Lightworks.
I used Lightworks like 6 years back, has it improved since then? I liked it, but the 720p export limit was a bummer
The free version can still only export 720p, but the “Create license” that I bought on sale exports 4k. I’m not sure on how it differs from 6 years ago, I just started using it like 6 months ago so I can’t answer that for you. You could try the free version just to see how it works, and if you think you might like to use it and it’s worth paying, wait for a sale on it. I wouldn’t have paid the standard price of $160 but for $80 it was worth it to me instead of having to transcode everything before editing.
I will say though, that before Lightworks I used Davinci Resolve and the transition was absolutely seamless. That might be different if you’re doing more advanced editing, not sure. I don’t do any advanced video editing, very basic things, and I’m learning as I go, so take that into consideration.
The alternatives that I considered were using DR in Windows, but I just can not stand the workflows of Windows. I feel like I’m wading through 3ft of shit whenever I have to use it for something. Or using something like Kdenlive, but felt that wasn’t quite as refined as either DR or Lightworks just yet, but I’m sure it will be eventually.
What? x264 is h.264 encoder, it ships with ffmpeg
Last time I tried the Linux version of Resolve, it wouldn’t start up due to it being incompatible with the default AMD drivers. This was years ago, so maybe it works now.
How stable is it now? I never felt quite comfortable enough to do more elaborate projects with it.
It’s definitely stable enough for doing “real work” on, though the lack of GPU accelerated timeline playback can make some more complex projects a little difficult. I’ve used it for proper work plenty of times over the years (I survived the Covid lockdowns entirely with paid video editing from home, on Kdenlive, as my normal work was unavailable).
I still frequently save manually with a new filename, due to old version paranoia, but if I’m honest, it’s own “it saves every click in an ongoing temp file” sort of thing works great. You lose 2 seconds of work, then restart and restore.
Basic edits are likely to have no crashes at all, wheras ones where you, for example, pan and zoom with keyframes, then speed up, then reverse the footage, then try to re-edit the pan and zoom, might get its keyframes in a twist and crash frequently.
I’ve heard the Windows version is less stable.
Sounds better than my last experience with it, maybe I’ll try it again. But still, not 100% confidence inspiring
GPU acceleration is not a problem of playback, but how playback works
I tried a few FOSS NLEs and Kdenlive is my favorite. The native one from the Arch repos at least. I know the flatpak or AppImage versions can be problematic sometimes especially when you throw some weird files at it.
Yeah, I’ve never been a huge fan of Flatpaks, AppImages, Snaps etc., especially when it comes to interacting with the storage.
I just like to have the binary sitting in my binary folder, at least for “media creation” programs.
What happened with shotcut?
At least for me, shotcut is really unstable, they’re removing features that I liked, old versions that worked previously are buggy … at least for me, it was a bad experience overall. Hadn’t had any of these problems with Kdenlive, so i switched
Do you use native distribution packages or Flatpak? Distributions packaging applications with changed dependencies from when the developer made that version can cause instability. That’s one of the reasons I’m advocating that developers maintain their own Flatpak releases.
One, my sweet Olive. One day it will be your time to shine.
I took a look at it, and it does look really promising! I’m excited to see how it’s gonna turn out

Know any good plugins to improve it btw?
Personally I don’t, it’s been a while and my usage was never too professional. A quick web search doesn’t seem to show anything, though that’s probably due to the video editor’s obscurity.
exactly my experience
Kernel panics because it wants too 🫥
I use both, because shortcut can make the video shake to the beat of musik
It’s a nice feature, but i don’t think it looks THAT nice
for memes its a usefull effect sometimes
