Does Spain have a Machismo culture, comparable or to the same degree as South America?

I have limited contact with South America, except for some immigrants, but from what I’ve noticed, the Machismo is much more “in your face” in Mexico and South America than in Spain. The shameless and open displays during the World Cup, have caught a lot of the public by surprise and got them up in arms.

There is definitely a problem, but since the leftist coalition government got in power (socialist + left of that), it’s been putting a lot of work into highlighting and decrying all the sexually intolerant behaviors. To the point that the right (conservative right + far right) has based it’s last campaign on the premise of “removing all these progre(ssive) laws” and basically nothing else, but now even they got forced to kind of shyly condemn this (they’ve still got close to 50% of the votes, with the far right getting a good chunk, and those have “avoided giving an opinion”, so it’s not all rosy).

But, there is an Equality Ministry, that keeps highlighting all the abuse, constantly publishing domestic abuse stats, organizing feminist and pro-lgbt+ acts, supporting feminist works and discriminated groups in general, pushing for the application of a “parity law” that requires a minimum 40-60% split in all institutions and directing organisms, and so on.

That last one, had them call out the vastly men-dominated governing bodies of the Football Federation and the Sports Federation, which I don’t know if they have even a single woman, much less the minimum 40%.

Generally, the Machismo here comes from the times of Franco’s dictature era (45+ years ago), when it was pretty commonplace and even encouraged. Nowadays it’s toned down, and seen by most as something from the past… which of course speaks to the conservatives, but what are you gonna do. The political spectrum here is much wider than in places like the US, we have everything from actual anarcho-communists, to openly fascist-conservatives, along with both left and right flavors of both nationalists and separatists, even a few ex-terrorists turned politicians.

There have been some serious problems with younger generations, that currently get blamed on too early access to smartphones and online porn, but it remains to be seen how that one evolves. Some groups of young adults also organize around online chat channels, and encourage each other to push things up to the rape level, which has lead to general public outcry and some hastened and kind of botched law changes, but it would seem like the overall sentiment of the population is in the right place. There are some adults who will “among us men” still come out as wildly sexist, but generally keep it down in everyday life.

To summarize, there is a problem, IMO it’s much less than in South America, there is work being done to deal with it, and these ludicrous displays have most people, at least publicly, condemning them.
