Sony’s new PS5 update includes Dolby Atmos and the ability to mute the startup beep | You can now silence the PS5 beep sound and use a second controller to assist friends or family in games.::Sony is releasing a big new PS5 update. It includes Dolby Atmos support, the ability to mute the boot up beep, and you can use a second controller to help friends in games.
“…use a second controller to help friends in games.”
I remeber playing Mario Kart in college and one of my buddies got his wireless controller from upstairs and put it on the same channel as mine. Everytime I went to take a corner or make a critical maneuver he would move the opposite direction and send me off a cliff or into a shell. He really did and excellent job of “helping” me.
Hopefully this will enable this sort of “helping” for people to make memories. (Clearly this has stuck with me for 20 years).
Think about a controller that remained ON and has stick drift.
You are playing solo but that unused controller keeps parasiting the inputs.
Good luck troubleshooting this.
And thanks to Sony for making sure stick drifts is still a thing. The solution exists and doesn’t seem very expensive…
If it’s unused you wouldn’t connect it… so I do not see the problem. Like why would you leave it on? Even if it’s a mistake is easy to “fix”.
I see simple scenarios:
- PS5 console in a family.
- Gamer 1 plays multiplayer with gamer 2
- Gamer 2 leaves and just puts the controller down
- Gamer 1 starts playing a solo game unaware controller 2 is wirelessly still connected to the console
- Gamer 1 herits from stick drift from controller 2
Seems like a fairly reasonable thing to happen when it comes to console use.
6. Gamer 1 notices something weird and then sees that the second controller is still on and disconnects it. That is the easy fix.
Plus in any case like this will only happen if you enabled this sharing controller thing just before. Most of the time you will not be playing with it enabled.

Look at Mr Fancy Pants here with his two Wavebird controllers.
Oh, we had four! All in or nothing!
Is there an option to make it louder and continuous?
That way I can hear my neighbours turn his on so I can join too.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
Sony is rolling out a big new PS5 update today, just over a month after it first started testing the changes in a beta.
The Dolby Atmos support comes in the form of Sony’s 3D Audio implementation (Tempest 3D AudioTech).
It’s compatible with Dolby Atmos devices like sound bars, TVs, or home theater systems.
You can now mute the PS5 beep sound that chirps when you turn the console on or off, or even when it goes into rest mode after being idle.
You’ll still need an M.2 SSD that meets the minimum requirements, but there are now more options for PS5 owners who want a lot more storage.
Sony is also adding a number of UI improvements and some general navigation changes with this latest PS5 software update.

I could also see 2 controllers controlling a single thing being useful for accessibility. For people who must use parts other than just fingers to control games, being able to use two at once might help. I know a lot of people cheered at Microsoft’s customizable controller for the same reason.
That’s probably the main reason.
Although to be clear Sony also came up with an accessible controller in case people do not know about it.
Just wish they would add the option to turn off the bright white light on the console, super distracting during movies in a dark room.
Good god, finally. I can’t believe this wasn’t an option from the start.
