I should work on it more before showing it off, but I can’t wait any longer lol.

What do you think of it so far?

This is still a prototype mind you and I’m still working on the aesthetics, but what we have so far is that every essay will automatically be transcluded on this page, ordered from newest to oldest.

edit: there’s now pictures to illustrate the essays

My big question I think is: is this more conducive to reading and getting clicks than the legacy page? (https://en.prolewiki.org/wiki/ProleWiki:Essays).

Secondly, does this look pretty self-explanatory to you? There are only two essays in it mind you because it’s still a prototype, but we have more than 20-30 to put on this page eventually.

What more would you see to spice this page up? And maybe drive the blog style home a little bit more.

I like it a lot, it feels more immediately approachable than the old format. However the blog-style format does seem to favor new content over old content. As Marxists we know well the importance to reading older material! Perhaps in addition to the “last updated” box, above it even, maybe add an index, separated by author or topic, to retain the quick access and condensed overview the old layout had going for it.

I suspect this is just an oversight/formatting error but I don’t like how clicking “read more” leads to a duplication of content. Perhaps it’s just in inevitable result of the way the page parses articles that duplication is necessary but it looks ugly.

Thanks for the feedback, unfortunately I don’t think it’s possible to remove the template from appearing on the essay, at least not in v1. Maybe we’ll edit the essays to integrate that part or maybe I’ll find a solution in a dream

Could you just put the summary in it’s own little hidden block and then set up the CSS for the homepage to override the hidden setting? Or vice versa? So that it’s still there and can still be fetched by the homepage but just isn’t rendered on the essay page. I’ve never played with wiki setups though, so maybe that level of HTML/CSS junk isn’t really feasible.

lmao you’re a fucking genius, I had to use !important on the display and this was only possible after I’d made the required templates, but yes it works.

Looks great on desktop, but on the phone the two navigation boxes take a lot of space and it would be great if they were collapsible somehow. And seeing the first paragraphs is always a great way to test interest in longer articles, I think this is a great idea.

Collapsible menus is a great idea but not great to implement because it requires javascript. Well, it seems to be the only option anyway so I’ll probably get to it lol

Can’t a similar mechanism from the hamburger menus be used instead? I don’t remember how those are made, but they work in the ProleWiki even with JavaScript disabled, so that may be an option.

You can make them work with an input field (or even the display tag now, which is quite new) but Mediawiki doesn’t support all HTML tags, and input is one of them.

    • The “Last Updated” box appears twice
    • What are the articles in in the “Last Updated” box[es]? It seems strange to me that they don’t appear in the main list
    • I think it’d be a good idea to have a list of all essays somewhere (either like this or in a more structured format)

Not sure I love the idea of having pictures above each essay like that but love it besides that
