Hello Swedish friends! I hope you’re all well (:
So, I’m a young Portuguese guy and I was wondering what Swedes should think of Portugal and the Portuguese. I did some research, but found almost nothing. So I decided to ask here.
I’m very curious to hear your answers! (:

The Portuguese people are warm and friendly. Much calmer and less choleric than their eastern neighbours. They love the ocean.
The only downside is that food with more than 4 ingredients is considered very advanced :)
In short: I tell everyone I know to visit Portugal. I have spent a lot of time there and I have nothing but good things to say. I have always been treated well. From the fanciest parts of Cascais to the half angolan suburbs of Lisboa.
And when it gets too hot, the Atlantic is always refreshing, whereas the Mediterranean is like swimming in vegetable soup.

It’s funny you mention that, because most foreigners think that Portuguese from Portugal sounds Russian

Why would I have an opinion? I never think about Portugal or the Portuguese

From my personal experience most Swedes know very little about Portugal and just assumes it’s sort of similar to Spain, but perhaps even poorer.

Did you meant you resent that remark? Or do you actually look like that remark?
tell-me-your-worries at 2023-10-05 18:25:16+00:00 ID:

It’s a play on words.
The original saying is of course “I resent that remark” but in this case, I’m a swede that knows next to nothing about Portugal, hence I resemble that remark.

“Even poorer” 😂 I can confirm Portugal is poor, but Spain is not.

Southern Europe = Poor and chaotic in the Swedish mind. It dosen’t matter if it’s true or not, it’s how Swedes view the world.
When covid was spreading like a wildfire in northern Italy (which is more or less on a northern European level of development) and, unknown to everyone at the time, already had started to spread in Sweden, our top governmental epidemiologist basically said “oh, but that’s… like… Italy… you know (not a real developed functional state like Sweden, Denmark, Germany or the Netherlands)”.
Southern europeans are viewed as… well… maybe not outright lazy but at least ineffective.
I of course speak generally and not every Swede hold these views, but I would say that they are a part of our cultural understanding of the region.

I think most Swedes think of it as a place for vacations, catch some sun, maybe surf, and eat fresh fish, seafood and drink vinho verde. Most that have visited have probably visited the Algarve region, then Lissabon and Porto.
I would say that the most press Portugal gets in Sweden besides Ronaldo is that your drug policys is used a lot as an positive example in debates regarding narcotics.

What do you mean?
If you don’t look rapey or stabby you’re gonna be fine 🤷♂️
Edit: Or you just mean the general reputation of Portugal?

Oh! Well I’m no expert but as far as I know the Portuguese do not have a bad rep for any reason, everyone I’ve talked to who have been there loved it, and you are often used as an example for why we should decriminalize most drugs ☺️

Portugal and Portugese ppl seem pretty chill but I dont know much about it other than what I’ve learned from friends and family who have been there. Everyone I know that have been to Portugal have mostly (almost only) nice things to say about the country and its people.

Most Swedes probably don’t know that much about Portugal. I think Spain is a more common tourist destination, so Portugal kind of gets lumped in with Spain. Although there are a small number of Swedes who choose to retire in Portugal, especially before the tax rules were changed in 2022.
Personally I’ve been to Portugal (Lisbon) once and I loved it. Very friendly people, great food and wines and such a beautiful city. I was there during the pandemic, though, so there were fewer tourists than normal.
There’s also the whole “Portugal can into Nordic” meme, where Portugal seems to alternatively rank among the Nordic countries or the Balkans/Eastern Europe in various statistics.
