what would you have the UN do? immediately post ww2 basically all of the Jews in europe were landless persons - they couldnt really return to their countries of origin because most of those cities didnt exist or the countries really didnt want them back. shipping them off to Israel wasnt the best plan but there was historical precedent and ultimately it worked out pretty well.
the arabs disagreed of course and that led to the conflicts in the 1960s where Israel slapped them down. since then it’s been a lot of terrorism since none of the arab countries in the area is willing to actually go to war again - they’re aware they have zero chance of success.
