I’m really enjoying Journey to the One (Pharoah Sanders, 1980). The blend of world music and spiritual jazz on this album is almost perfect in my opinion.
I’ve been revisiting Horace Silver’s discography. His sense of melody and use of dynamics are superb.
I just discovered Cassiopeia the other day.
To be honest they’re not my completely my jam, but they do have a unique sound
KNOWER has a new album out that’s pretty bangin’, and Louis Cole’s “Some Unused Songs” has been nice to put on while I’m working.
Need to get back into my Miles Davis binge that I started in March. Listened to as many of his studio albums as I could find in chronological order (trying to make it through the 50s was a challenge given all the research that was needed) but I got preoccupied with other things around the start of his electric period.
I always get sidetracked with Miles because he worked with (and in many cases helped to launch the careers of) so many incredible musicians. It’s super easy (but also super rewarding) to pull on the “oh I like that solo, who is that?” thread and unravel an entire career’s worth of incredible music.
