Taking the knee was a powerful way to amplify the message of Black Lives Matter, writes Jon Sopel. But football needs to stop its sanctimonious posturing and allow fans a place to escape what’s happening elsewhere in the world
There’s nothing wrong with football making a stand on basic issues that shouldnt be political like ‘dont be racist’ or ‘no to homophobia’ but taking a stand on highly complex geopolitical issues like the middle east is different. Not least because I just dont think there is anything of value that can be added by the FA on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
I dont really want to hear Klopps takes on a long running geopolitical war.
I think the best is a simple gesture like an armband, minutes silence or kneel for those killed in the conflict. Anything else is likely to do more harm than good.
