No football player should be paid as much money as this guy is paid. I don’t care if he is capable of teleporting from one end of the pitch to the other with the ball balanced on his head.

…because the standard of football being played, even further down the leagues, was of a technically much higher level than the shit churned out by garbage like West Ham, Wigan, Crystal Palace etc.

Anybody with a set of eyes could see that. Athletic Bilbao made Manchester United, under Fergie no less, look like a pub team, and they were doing very, very badly in their own league.

The standard across the board, regardless of “competitiveness” was of a far higher standard than you got from the cloggers that made up the “rest” of the Premier League, which, below the top 2-3 at the time, was absolute muck.

To be honest, not much has changed.
