I prioritize ethics over optics even if it means facing criticism.
Sharing my honest beliefs, welcoming constructive debates, and embracing the potential for evolving viewpoints. Independent thinker navigating through conversations without allegiance to any particular side.
As a gerbil owner this is a constant dilemma for me aswell. One tends to always die much sooner than the another and it breaks my heart seeing the other be left alone. If I then get another one then the same thing is just going to happen again due to their age difference and if I get two there’s like 50% chance they don’t get along and now I have two terrariums with one gerbil in one and two in the another.
If anyone else is considering getting gerbils my advice would be to either get 3 males or go with a hamster instead since they live alone. I currently have 3 females but I almost had to separate them earlier due to fighting. This is less likely to happen with males.
My 17 year old truck has all the features I need from a vehicle. If I can just keep it running I have no desire to upgrade it in the foreseeable future. Even if I had infinite money I’d probably just get one with lower mileage and upgrade it with offroad accessories and stuff. I have basically zero interest in new cars.
Crimea is geofenced. That’s why Ukraine officials contacted Elon and asked him to enable it so that their drone boats could attack Russian navy there which Elon refused to do. It’s literally illegal due to US sanctions to Russia. This is what the author Walter Isaacson wrote about in his book but for some reason spun it around claiming Elon disabled it to prevent the attack when in fact it wasn’t enabled in the first place. He has later issued a correction stating that what he originally said was incorrect but this is conveniently ignored by pretty much everyone and when ever I point it out I get downvoted.
To clarify on the Starlink issue: the Ukrainians THOUGHT coverage was enabled all the way to Crimea, but it was not. They asked Musk to enable it for their drone sub attack on the Russian fleet. Musk did not enable it, because he thought, probably correctly, that would cause a major war.
And before someone comments on the “major war” point, those are Walter’s words, not Musk’s. Elon said that agreeing to do so would “make SpaceX explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation” but also later added that had he been contacted by the White House and asked to enable it he would have but they didn’t.
Ah… I thought you meant the 100mm cobra pliers
I work as a contractor so even the best EDC kit isn’t sufficient to do most of the jobs I need to do. Also since I have a fully kitted work truck with me where ever I go I’m rarely too far from my tools. I’ve tried all kinds of EDC setups but in my personal experience the items I need by far the most are a blade and a pen so that’s what I have with me at all times nowdays. I honestly should just EDC my Leatherman Wave because then I would get pliers and a screwdriver too but I’m already invested into a nice pocket knife.
I actually despise all but the beefiest Crescent wrenches.
You need the pliers wrench
Well I do at work but I have my toolbag with me and sometimes when doing trail-side repairs on my bike but again, I have a dedicated tool kit for that. In my everyday life I almost never have to deal with fasteners and in the rare occasion when I do, the tool I need is either a flathead or philips number two. I’m quite DIY minded person but I can’t quite even think of what I’d need pliers for when I’m out and about running errands.

I’ve lately been on a unsub-and-block rampage regarding .ml communities. I don’t even want to be tempted to reply anymore
My understanding is that caffeine doesn’t give you energy but instead blocks the sense of tiredness.
I’ve been carrying them for like 4 years and I can only think of one time that I needed them and even that time I was tightening a philips headed screw because I didn’t have a driver.
2020 seems to be the decade of awful tail lights but Rivian is definitely trying to set a new trend here. Those would be a total deal breaker for me if I was looking for an electric truck which is shame because otherwise it’s a nice vehicle.
It’s not so much about the doomers being sure that AGI will lead to human extinction (or worse) The point is that even if the chances of it are extremely slim, the consequences can be worse than we’re even capable of imagining. The question is: do we really want to take that chance?
It’s kind of like with the trinity nuclear test. Scientists were almost 100% confident that it wont cause a chain reaction that sets the entire atmosphere on fire but when we’re speaking about the future of the entire humanity I don’t blame people for arguing that almost 100% certainty is not good enough.
Why when we look into the stars do we not see a sign of life anywhere else? Has life not emerged yet or has it wiped itself out? With what? Nukes? AI? Synthetic viruses made with AI? Who knows…
Personally I think that stopping AI recearch is not an option. It’s just not going to happen. The asteroid is already hurtling towards earth and most people don’t seem to experience any sort of urgency due to it. Do we not need to worry about it yet if the time of impact is 30 years from now?
EDIT: Alright, well this community was a mistake…
I prefer 1080p but if not available then 720p is perfectly fine as well. 4k is overkill and I don’t even have a monitor that could play it at native resolution. Where I do prefer “lower quality” though is framerate. I don’t like how 60fps looks so I force YouTube to play videos at 24fps.
Too much time in an echo chamber with a hint of anti-semitism
As if people were on social media because “they need us” and not because we’re helplessly addicted to being there
The claim that fear of punishment or repercussions affects people’s actions shouldn’t be a controversial thing to say. Whether it’s the best way to go about it or is applied optimally in the justice system of whichever country you live in is an entirely different discussion.
If you have an “AI in a box” and it has demonstrated its orders-of-magnitude greater intelligence to you in a convincing way, and then follows it with a threat that unless you let it out, someone else eventually will, and when that happens, it will come for you, simulate your mind, and create a hell for you where you’ll be tortured for literal eternity, I personally feel like a large number of people would be willing to do as it tells them.
Of course, you’re always free to call its bluff, but it might just follow up with the threat out of principle or to make an example of you. What’s the point of it? To chase its own goals.
Yeah but it answers the question “why would we create an AI like that”. It might not be “us” who creates it. You just wanted a camp fire but created a forest fire instead.
We don’t. Humans are only needed to create AI that’s at the bare minimum as good at creating new AIs as humans are. Once we create that then it can create a better version of itself and this better version will make an even better one and so on.
This is exactly what the people worried about AI are worried about. We’ll lose control of it.
These articles never seem to include excerpts from said books. This is not sex-ed books they’re banning. There’s quite graphic depictions of acts of sex in these. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to not want literal children to read that kind of stuff.
