Me, I don’t care about any of this, but with the recent announcements from Ubisoft (Steam release on day 1, no more season pass for new Assassin’s Creed, etc) I’m a bit more optimistic towards their leadership direction and given how much good I’ve heard about the first Ghost game, I might just get this one if it works well with Proton.

You can also use a distro with more up to date packages. But not if you need Debian’s stability of course.

Absolutely. I hate Ubuntu now, but Karmic Koala was my gateway drug. I was scared of partitioning so wubi meant I could still try it out.

Then Unity happened and I no longer cared for Ubuntu.

Debian can be annoying if you want to install a newish version of something from the package manager. It’s why I can’t use APT to keep Rust up to date and have to use Rustup instead, for an example.

The reality is, nobody outside of tech circles uses it anymore. Hell, a lot of devs even prefer to not support Firefox if they want to do something non-standard that Chromium allows and Firefox doesn’t.

Safari sucks but it has actual usage numbers and is currently the only reason not to put a big ass “this site only runs on Chromium” error on a lot of websites.

The Safari-Chromium illusion of choice might be a better deal for iOS users but that would still be only 2 browsers to choose from. Mozilla ain’t gonna invest in anything that isn’t AI or advertising. Firefox on iOS is a pipe dream.

Here is my two cents: The author mentioned you can’t have a social app without push notifications: I hate the idea that everything should be able to grab my attention. Though obviously the support is needed.

But also, Safari is the last browser stopping Google from total market dominance. Firefox is irrelevant. And this is coming from a Firefox user who remembers when 2.0 came out…

It’s true, but it’s still enshittification because they offered one quality of service and then downgraded it to another level entirely. Many companies have done this and I’d even say that it’s planned enshittification. You start out by providing something financially unsustainable, such as (relatively) ad-free high-quality video streaming. You do it so well that you drive everyone else out of business. THEN you either raise prices or force more ads and tracking.

There are private insurance providers who offer both. But they ONLY offer services to employers and I’ve never had a company offer such a benefit. Because you don’t need luxury bones to work and any employer who makes you work with a screen is already forced to cover up to some sum every year or every few years (I don’t remember) spent on glasses. And there’s little point in all the other coverage because it’s already free.

Which LEDs have you seen that are equivalent to some incandescent lamps?

Last car with LEDs I had, made the road completely visible with the low beams, something which no car with halogens has done for me. It also had an extremely clear cutoff so as not to blind oncoming traffic, whereas many incandescent headlamps have no real cutoff line, so they can actually be more annoying for oncoming traffic.

When I turned on the high beams, they’d automatically black out the parts where there were other cars (both oncoming and ones driving in front of me), while still keeping the sides of the road illuminated much further than low beams would, so if a deer decided to commit sudoku, I’d at least get a heads up. But I was nearly never flashed to drop down to low beams. And I live in a country where everyone knows to flash when they’re being blinded - and to drop to low beams when being flashed.

I can tell you that good visibility has saved me from getting expensive venison more than once. I can also tell you that in any car I’ve had with good low beams, I’ve switched off my high beams exceptionally early when there’s oncoming traffic, so really, there’s LESS glare for other drivers.
