I’m usually the one teaching new games, so I have to learn them thoroughly beforehand. I do all of the above. I will watch a video first to get a good idea of the flow of the game. I really like Watch It Played. He does a great job of explaining the rules without being to wordy and in the weeds. Then I will read the manual and play things out so I can really see how things work. This way I can get all specific rules that may be glossed over in the video.
2 players: 7 Wonders Duel, Hive, Schotten Totten, Sobek: 2 Players, Cribbage.
4 players, also great for 2 and 3 players: Arboretum, Azul, Calico, Gizmos, Happy Little Dinosaurs (good for younger kids), Photosynthesis, Shifting Stones, Sprawlopolis, That’s Pretty Clever!, War Chest.
My Girlfriend and I play a lot of 2 player games. 7 Wonders Duel and Schotten Totten are our personal favorites. Calico and Arboretum are also a lot of fun.
Cragheart and the Brute are my go to Duo. But I also like to play the Tinkerer in a bigger party.
