Not really his fault, but Duncan Edwards.
You can’t be a ‘bang average footballer’ and play in most nations’ top divisions.
For most people, the best player at their school, the one that absolutely dances round everyone else is probably going to be non-league or semi-pro standard at best.
Even ‘shit’ premier league footballers have a skill set that will make moat wannabes weep.
I’ve crunched the numbers for Premier League teams so you dont have to.
Apart from: Arsenal: Henry Chelsea: Lampard Man City : Aguero Man utd: Rooney Newcastle: Shearer And Spurs: Kane
None of the other top scorers for the premier league yeams are currently active, the most recent is Steve Bull for Wolves in 1999.
Ian Rush is Liverpool’s last appearance was in 1996.
Fitness etc seems to have a little bit to do with it, but club success looks more of an indicator as does the length of time a player was at the club.
So Arsenal played far more in the CL and were a great team when TH was active. Chelsea were rubbish for years before Gullit took over, culminating in their glory years while Lampard was active.
Ditto city, Rooney was at Utd for 13 years, at the height of their power, Shearer was at Newcastle for a decade and Kane waa a player in the only Spurs side that has ever consistently got into Europe and was there for 14 years.
Apart from then every other premier league team has a top scorer from at 30ish or more years ago. A sizeable minority (8) have leading scorers from before the Secomd World War.
