Personally I hope they never do, though it does look likely. Like many pre-November '22 old-time Mastodon et.al. fedizens, I came to the fediverse specifically because I didn’t want to have anything with FB/Meta/Twitter or the other commercial, “engagement”-based, enshittified social media.

It feels like the fediverse is being gentrified, with half of it eagerly welcoming their new overlords (why don’t they just join Threads?) and the other half resisting. The half that doesn’t federate with Meta will move on, like people priced out of their own neighborhoods by gentrification, and become the new “real fediverse” where people can go to live free from corporate interference.

I don’t consider being on Threads as being “on the fediverse”. My definition of the fediverse is servers that follow the Activity Pub protocol to interact with each other. You might disagree with that definition, but Threads only lets us “follow” (view-only) certain of their accounts (only about 2000 out of millions) from Mastodon. Those accounts do not see any replies to their post from the fediverse, or any fediverse posts at all for that matter–we are invisible to them. So no, he’s not “on the fediverse”, he’s on Threads. I doubt he knows the fediverse even exists.

You could go for the best of both worlds and use Mint LMDE (Debian Edition). But if only using it as a server, plain Debian should be all you need.

I use the Menu key for my compose key, since I never used it for anything and it’s conveniently right next to the right Ctrl key.
BTW if you want to see the combos that are possible with the Compose key, look in /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose

Fortunately Linux Mint will continue to package it as a deb.

I think MATE is the best balance between lighter weight and ease of use.

A stroke can definitely affect your speech, so some people may not pronounce their words as they did before. In some cases it might sound to others as if they have a “foreign accent”, especially if they can no longer pronounce some sounds like “th” or “r” well, which are also sounds that non-English speakers have trouble with.

As for suddenly being able to speak a language they never knew? No. I have heard of some people becoming more artistic or creative, but that could be from damage to other parts of the brain that previously inhibited that behavior.

Thanks but I looked in Settings. There aren’t what I would call “tabs” there, but there are different sections (General, Sub channel, Threads, etc) but nothing called Collections.

I feel stupid, is this currently available? It seems yes, some people say they’ve made one, but I can’t seem to find either a “Categories” or “Collections” option. Sorry, I don’t know which area is called the “user panel”, but I’ve looked at the tabs across the top, and in all the menus (+, channels, profile).

I did see the collections tab on the Magazines page though, and I see Random Collections in the right side panel, just can’t find where to create my own category/collection.

Before that you had to work until you died or couldn’t physically do it any more and starved.

Exactly. A third party that only puts up a candidate for President every four years is not a serious party but a joke. It takes years of work, starting with local and state offices, building support and good candidates, to be a serious alternative party with a wide base of support and chance to actually win national offices.

Unfortunately in this election (like last one and probably the next few elections at least), we don’t have the luxury of voting for who we most idealistically agree with, or making a protest statement. Fascism and authoritarianism are on the rise here (and in many other places). It has completely taken control of one of the two major parties, the Republican party.

The way our electoral system works, if we don’t vote for the only viable opposition, which is the Democrats, we are in danger of allowing an authoritarian regime to take over and toss democracy and our civil rights aside. Once democracy is lost it will take generations to get back, if ever. Trump in spite of everything, is the likely republican nominee (if not, someone just like him). That’s scary as hell. Despite people being unhappy with Biden or his age, he has accomplished a lot in spite of the odds, with republicans doing all in their power to stop him. I think she’s upset because “Secretary of Transportation” has the word “Trans” in it and she got confused.

Fear of being primaried is certainly strong enough to get them to go along with almost anything, but since the rise of the Manchurian Cantaloupe it really has gone far beyond that to fear of literal violence against them and their families. They are thoroughly intimidated and under the control of the extremists.

Of course the threats and violence also extend to election workers, judges, government employees, etc. Remember what happened to Nancy Pelosi’s husband as just one example among many in the last few years.
