refurbished/used thinkpads are the way to go. try thinkpads from somewhere around 5-10 yrs ago. ask ur brother what he wants from a laptop. if he want older tech there’s definitely great options

why refurbished/used thinkpads? they’re rugged. many thinkpads from 10+ yrs ago still look brand-new and function perfectly fine, whereas laptops from dell, hp, etc. would be falling apart (literally), or already have

here’s where u can find a list of every thinkpad model and the specs of most of them

    try looking on ebay

Maybe a Chromebook if your brother is just gonna do school/office work.

A refurbished laptop would be a good idea too, ThinkPads are often durable and you can get great deals if you buy them used or refurbished.

Refurbished Dell Latitude, look out for the following models (best—>worst):

    1. 7400 Metal body
    2. 7400 Plastic body
    3. 5400
    4. 7490

Note: best to worst is not related to performance as all come with 8th gen processors. It is based on my experience with their build qualities.

Yeah probably best to go used. Try for at least 4 cores, 16gb ram, and an ssd for the boot drive. Also good to clean dust out when you get it.

Don’t can’t buy anything brand new, they are almost unusable instead, find some older laptops from the used market that are more usable such a Dell Inspiron or a Lenovo ThinkPad that are from 2010-2014 which can run most programs in Windows 10 after upgrading the RAM and replacing its hard drive with an SSD and you can install Windows 11 just by doing some registry tweaks to get Windows 11 to work on “unsupported” hardware and get some of the updates, but I don’t recommend installing Windows 11 on “unsupported” hardware since driver support for Windows 11 is going to be limited for something like a 3rd gen i7

You should definitely get a Chromebook because a $300 dollar Windows laptop would be more of an insult than anything else.

I’m guessing she’s trying to get only brand new for that price and not willing to consider refurbished?

For that price, a chromebook would be a good way to go. Walmart had a good deal on a Acer 315 chromebook. It is $200.00 or bit less on Friday.

Walmart had a pretty nice Asus Vivobook that $370.00 with cpu i3-N chip.

A 3rd option is Dell Refurbished.com has business computer returned after a lease. A nice Latitude would be $350.00.

don’t get anything brand new, its gonna be complete garbage. Get a used laptop off of ebay, something like a Lenovo ThinkPad or HP EliteBook would be great.

I live by them. At least when looking at cheap and capable machines. I must be really lucky with them I have more than 10 of them. All 2015/2016 models.

My 2012 elitebook was still going strong until this year I suddenly couldn’t connect to internet even after following every troubleshooting step available.

For $150 I’d buy the same exact one again today if I still needed it

In addition to these two questions, is he rough on his stuff or careful with his stuff? Some laptops are sturdier than others, to put it mildly.
